The on page SEO checklist AI can now run for you

The on page SEO checklist has been stable for a decade: get the title right, match the intent, structure the headings, link internally, go deep enough to answer the query. What changed in the last two years is not the checklist. It is that most of it no longer needs your hands. Below is the working checklist, item by item, each marked machine (AI can check it and write the fix), machine + review (AI produces, human approves) or human (judgment call).

1. One page, one keyword (human, once)

Every page needs exactly one primary query it is trying to own, and no two pages should share one. This mapping is a strategy decision: which page deserves your best keyword is not something to delegate. Everything below assumes the mapping exists; when an audit "fails", half the time the real failure is here.

2. Title tag (machine + review)

Keyword first, under about 60 characters, composed of search terms rather than brand poetry, brand last. Machines check this perfectly and, as of 2026, write better keyword-first titles than most humans in a hurry. Review the rewrite for brand voice and ship it.

3. Meta description (machine + review)

Roughly 150 characters, keyword early, and a concrete reason to click. Not a ranking factor in the direct sense, but it is your ad copy on the results page, and a machine drafting ten variants beats a human drafting one at 6 p.m.

4. Heading structure (machine + review)

Exactly one H1 that carries the keyword; H2s that carve the topic the way searchers think about it, holding your secondary keywords; H3s only beneath their parents. AI reads a page's existing structure and proposes the corrected outline in seconds; you sanity-check that the proposed sections match what your page can honestly say.

5. Intent match (machine flags, human decides)

A commercial page will not rank for an informational query no matter how optimized it is, and vice versa. Machines are now good at diagnosing the mismatch ("this query wants a guide; this page is a product pitch"). The decision, split the page, retarget it, or accept the mismatch, is strategy and stays human.

6. Content depth (machine + review)

Not word count: coverage. Does the page answer the questions a searcher for that query predictably has next? AI compares your coverage against the query's intent, names the missing sections, and drafts them. The human pass is for facts and claims; the machine's confidence does not certify the accuracy of a statistic.

7. Internal links (machine + review)

Every important page needs keyword-anchored links from related pages in the body, not just navigation, and no page should be an orphan. This is the checklist item humans skip most, because doing it well means holding the whole site in your head. Machines hold whole sites in their head for a living.

8. Snippet and structure extras (machine)

Definitions stated cleanly for featured snippets, lists where lists win, question headings answered in the first sentence beneath them, and structured data where it applies. Mechanical, checkable, automatable end to end.

9. The re-check (machine, forever)

On page SEO decays: content ages, competitors update, intent drifts. The checklist is not a project, it is a schedule, which is the strongest argument for automation. A machine happily re-audits every page monthly and a rank tracker tells you which fixes actually moved positions; a human team does that exactly once, in Q1, with good intentions.

Run it on a real page right now

Items 2 through 8 are exactly what Seomake's free AI audit checks and writes fixes for, live, on any public URL. Paste a page, give it the keyword from item 1, and compare the machine's audit with your own instincts. If you would rather never run this checklist by hand again, that is the point: the on page SEO pillar runs it continuously across a whole site, and the loop handles what happens after each check fails.
