Is this SEO checker really free?

Yes. The audit itself costs nothing and asks for nothing: no account, no card, no email. You paste a URL and a keyword and you get the score, the issues and the evidence. What does the SEO checker actually check?

It fetches the live HTML of the page you name and reads it the way a crawler does: the title tag, the meta description, the heading structure, the visible body copy, the internal links and the way all of that lines up with the keyword you said the page should rank for. It then scores the page and lists each issue with the evidence that produced it.

Can an SEO checker tell me my Google ranking?

This one does not pretend to. A language model cannot see live search positions, and any tool that claims otherwise from a single page fetch is guessing. This is an on-page check. Ranking positions are a separate measurement, which is what the rank tracker does once a page is being tracked.

How long does the check take?

About 20 seconds, because the page is fetched and analyzed live rather than pulled from a stale index. If the page cannot be fetched, for example it is behind a login or blocks robots, the checker says so instead of inventing a result.

How is this different from a free SEO score widget?
