01 / THE HONEST LIST

SEO ranking tools: the top 10 best SEO tools and SEO software compared, tool by tool

We sell one of the tools on this page, so read the table with that in mind. It says plainly where Ahrefs, Semrush and Surfer beat us, because a comparison that never concedes anything is worth nothing to you.

No account. No card. Real output in about 20 seconds.

02 / The short answer

The best SEO tool depends on which job you are stuck on

There is no single best SEO tool, because SEO is four different jobs and no tool is best at all four. Use Ahrefs or Semrush to find the opportunity, Screaming Frog to crawl the site, Google Search Console (free) for your true ranking data, and an AI SEO tool such as Seomake to turn the findings into finished copy. Most teams that are honest about it run two tools, not one.

The trap is buying a fifth reporting tool when the bottleneck is not reporting. If you already know your title tags are weak and your pages are thin, another dashboard confirming it does not move a ranking. Something has to write the fix.

Prices verified against each vendor's public pricing page between 31 July and 15 August 2026.

03 / The ranking

Top 10 SEO tools, ranked, with the reason for each position

A ranking is only useful if you know what it is ranking for. This one ranks by how much of the SEO job a tool removes for a typical US business team paying for it out of a marketing budget, weighted by what it costs to get there. It is not ranked by feature count, and we have put ourselves eighth rather than first because that is where this measure honestly lands us.

1

Google Search Console

Free

Ranked first because nothing else has your real data. Every other tool on this list estimates what Google did; this one reports it. No team should buy anything before installing it.

2

Semrush

From $139/mo

The widest surface area available: organic, paid, PR, listings and AI visibility in one subscription. Ranked second rather than first because the bill grows fast once seats and add-ons land.

3

Ahrefs

From $129/mo

The best link index in the business and the cleanest keyword explorer. Third only because it is deliberately a research instrument and will not change anything on your site.

4

Screaming Frog

Free under 500 URLs

The reference technical crawler, with almost no limits and almost no hand-holding. Fourth because it solves one job completely, and that job is the one most large sites are quietly failing.

5

Moz Pro

From $49/mo

The cheapest credible way into a full suite, and the Medium tier at $179 tracks 1,500 keywords for $120 a month less than the Semrush tier that matches it. Weekly refresh is the tradeoff.

6

Surfer

From about EUR 49/mo

The tool writers actually open, because it gives them a target while drafting. Sixth because it is narrow by design: it optimizes a document and assumes the strategy happened elsewhere.

7

Search Atlas (OTTO)

From $99/mo

The only tool here that deploys the change itself, through a pixel, a Cloudflare install or a CMS integration. Seventh because pixel-applied fixes live in the browser and leave when you cancel.

8

Seomake

From $49/mo

Ours. It audits a page against the keyword it should own and writes the corrected title, meta and headings. Eighth because it covers one half of the job well and has no link index at all.

9

SE Ranking

From EUR 109/mo

The value pick for agencies: 10 projects and 2,000 daily-refreshed keywords at the entry tier, with API credits and an MCP server included rather than sold on top.

10

Seobility

Free tier, or about $50/mo

The only genuinely useful permanent free tier in the audit category. Tenth because the free plan caps hard at 1,000 pages and 10 keywords, but it is a real product, not a demo.

Four more are worth knowing about without making the ten. SEOptimer at $29 a month is the cheapest white-label audit report in the category, though white labeling actually starts at its $39 tier. SEO PowerSuite is desktop software at EUR 349 a year with no keyword cap, which changes the arithmetic completely for anyone tracking thousands of terms. Majestic does backlinks and nothing else, back to 2006, and is the tool link specialists keep after they drop everything else. Conductor serves the enterprise end and publishes no prices at all, which tells you where its sales process starts, and what a quote tends to come back at is covered in our Conductor SEO pricing breakdown.

If you want the audit-first end of this list compared properly, Seobility, WooRank and SE Ranking alternatives covers those four on published quotas. For the link end, Majestic SEO vs Semrush is the one comparison where the flat-price option wins outright.

04 / Compared

The tools worth your money, side by side

Entry pricing as published between 31 July and 15 August 2026, each figure read off the vendor's own page. Vendors change prices, so check before you buy. Semrush is the live example: it retired the Pro, Guru and Business plans in 2026, so a great many roundups still quote a Semrush Guru plan price you can no longer pay, and the tiers that replaced it went up. Every vendor's full plan ladder, plus what each one works out at per tracked keyword and per tracked AI prompt, is set out on our SEO software pricing comparison.

Tool Entry price Best at Weakest at Buy it if
Ahrefs From $129/mo Backlink index, competitive research Does not write anything for you Link building and competitor teardowns are your edge
Semrush $139/mo (SEO plan) Breadth: SEO, ads, PR, social in one Expensive once you add seats and add-ons You want one platform for search and paid together
Surfer From about 49 euros/mo Optimizing a draft against the SERP Narrow. It is a content tool, not a suite Your writers need a brief and a score while they draft
Screaming Frog Annual license (free under 500 URLs) Deep technical crawls, total control Desktop app, steep learning curve, no AI You own a large or messy site and like the details
OTTO SEO (Search Atlas) From $99/mo, 1 project Deploying fixes for you across client sites Pixel-applied changes vanish if you cancel You manage sites you cannot edit the code of
Google Search Console Free Your real queries, clicks and positions Tells you nothing about what to change Always. Every site should have it, day one
Moz Pro From $49/mo Cheapest route into a full suite Weekly rank refresh, and a long add-on ladder You want suite coverage without the Semrush bill
SE Ranking From EUR 109/mo 10 projects and 2,000 daily keywords at entry Geolocates, so the US dollar price is unconfirmed You run many client sites and count seats
Seobility Free tier, or about $50/mo A free plan that is a product, not a demo Caps hard: 1,000 pages, 10 keywords on free You want to audit properly before spending
Majestic From EUR 46.99/mo Link forensics, with an index back to 2006 Backlinks only. No crawler, no rank tracking Vetting links or auditing a profile you inherited
Seomake From $49/mo Turning an audit into the finished rewrite No backlink index. We do not do link research The backlog, not the reporting, is what is stuck

Read that "weakest at" column carefully, including ours. We have no backlink index and no intention of building one. If your problem is that nobody links to you, Ahrefs will help you more than we will, and we would rather tell you that now.

05 / Tool by tool

What each one is actually for

Ahrefs

The best link data in the business, and a keyword explorer most teams find easier to reason about than Semrush's. Site Explorer is still the fastest way to understand why a competitor outranks you. What it will not do is change a single word on your page. It is a research instrument, and it is honest about that.

Semrush

The widest surface area of any tool here: organic, paid, PR, social, listings, and an expanding AI toolkit that now tracks brand mentions inside AI answers. That breadth is real, and so is the bill once you add seats and add-ons. Buy it when you genuinely run paid and organic together.

Surfer

The tool writers actually like, because it gives them a target while they draft: terms to include, structure to match, a score that moves. It is deliberately narrow. It optimizes a document against a SERP, and expects you to have done the strategy elsewhere.

Screaming Frog

A desktop crawler with almost no opinions and almost no limits, free under 500 URLs. If you want to know every page with a duplicate title, a broken canonical or a 302 chain, nothing beats it. It is also the least beginner-friendly thing on this list by a distance.

OTTO SEO (Search Atlas)

The only tool here that applies the change itself rather than reporting it, which is why it sits in this roundup at all. The tradeoff is what you own afterwards. The pricing, the deployment methods and where it wins are worked through on the dedicated Search Atlas alternative page linked further down, rather than repeated here.

Google Search Console

The only tool on this page with your real data: the queries you actually appeared for, the clicks you actually got, and the average position Google actually gave you. Free, mandatory, and completely silent on what to do about any of it.

Seomake

Built for the half of SEO that the tools above hand back to you: the rewriting. It audits a page against the keyword it should own, then writes the corrected title, meta, headings and the thin section underneath, for you to approve. Unlimited audits, no credits. It will not find you backlinks.

06 / How to choose

Pick by the job you are stuck on, not by the feature grid

Every tool here is good. The question is which bottleneck is costing you rankings this quarter.

I do not know what to target

Ahrefs or Semrush

You need volume, difficulty and a competitor gap. That is what a research suite is for. Our own keyword research clusters what you find into a plan.

I know what to fix, but never do it

Seomake

The backlog is the bottleneck. An audit that ends in written copy clears it. Start with the SEO audit tool.

My writers need a brief

Surfer, or Seomake

Surfer scores a draft against the SERP. Seomake writes the draft. Different halves of the same problem, and AI content covers ours. Frase, Clearscope and MarketMuse sit on the brief side and are priced up on the SEO content brief generator page.

My site is technically broken

Screaming Frog

Crawl it properly before you write another word. No AI tool substitutes for a real crawl of a 40,000 URL site.

I want to know if it worked

Search Console, plus a tracker

GSC has the truth, a rank tracker has the daily granularity. Use both.

I want AI engines to cite me

Seomake

A different job with different rules. Our generative engine optimization page covers what actually earns a citation.

If you are weighing us against one tool in particular, we keep a straight comparison for each: Semrush alternative, Ahrefs alternative, Surfer SEO alternative and OTTO SEO alternative, which digs into Search Atlas pricing and how its pixel actually deploys a fix. If the shortlist is already down to the two big research suites, Semrush vs Ahrefs compares them directly on price, seat costs and AI visibility limits rather than against us, and Ahrefs pricing by plan carries the full Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise ladder with every add-on line. If the shortlist is running the other way and the budget is the constraint, Ubersuggest pricing works through the cheapest suite in this table, including how its lifetime deal and its flat $5 add-on ladder change the real monthly cost. If your question is less about which suite to buy and more about which parts of the job a machine should be doing at all, the SEO automation tools page splits every SEO task into automate fully, draft and approve, or keep human.

07 / Paid vs free

Best paid SEO tools, and the three free ones that are not a demo

People searching specifically for paid or premium SEO tools have usually already been burned by a free tier that stopped working at the point it got interesting. The useful question is not free versus paid, it is which free tiers are real products and which are lead capture. Three on this list are real. Most of the rest are a trial with a longer name.

Tool Free tier Where it stops What paying buys
Google Search Console Permanent, complete Your own verified sites only Nothing. There is no paid tier and none is needed
Screaming Frog Permanent, up to 500 URLs The 501st URL, and saved configurations EUR 245 a year removes the cap and unlocks scheduling
Seobility Permanent, 1 project 1,000 pages, 10 keywords, 5 checks a day About $50 a month for 25,000 pages and 300 keywords
SEOptimer Instant audit, no signup One report, no tracking, no history $29 a month for crawls, $39 for white labeling
SEO PowerSuite Permanent, 1 project You cannot save the project, 500 URL crawl EUR 349 a year for unlimited keywords and saved work
Moz MozBar extension only No campaigns, no crawls, no tracking From $49 a month for the actual suite
WooRank None The 3-day trial requires a card $89.99 a month for 1 project and 50 keywords
SE Ranking None 14-day trial, no card required From EUR 109 a month for 10 projects

Free tier limits read off each vendor's own pricing page: Seobility, SEOptimer, WooRank and SE Ranking on 12 August 2026, SEO PowerSuite on 11 August, Moz on 9 August, Screaming Frog on 15 August 2026. Screaming Frog geolocates its pricing and served us euros.

When free is genuinely enough

One site, under 500 pages, and you are the only person who needs the data. Search Console plus Screaming Frog covers that completely and costs nothing. Adding a paid suite at this size buys you competitor data you will not act on.

When paid pays for itself

The moment SEO is a revenue channel with a target attached. One recovered page on a commercial query usually covers a year of an entry plan. The threshold is not company size, it is whether anyone is accountable for the number.

What premium actually adds

Above roughly $250 a month you are mostly buying seats, projects, refresh frequency and API access, not better data. Check which of those four you actually need, because vendors price them very differently from each other.

The pattern worth noticing across that table is that the genuinely free products come from either Google, which has no incentive to upsell you, or from smaller vendors using the free tier as their marketing. The large suites do not offer one at all, which is the clearest signal in the category about where the money is. Every vendor's full plan ladder, with cost worked out per tracked keyword, is on our SEO software pricing comparison. If the sticker price itself is the objection, where the money in a Semrush bill actually goes breaks the bundle down line by line. If the API line item is what you are trying to size, Semrush API pricing works through the one bill in this category that no vendor publishes.

08 / SEO ranking tools

SEO ranking tools: what you get for the money, and where the allowance runs out

Most people searching for SEO ranking tools want one narrow thing: a list of keywords, checked on a schedule, charted over time. That job is sold in a comparable unit across every vendor, tracked keywords, which makes it the one part of the SEO software market you can compare honestly on price. Here is what each tool's entry tier includes, using each vendor's own published allowance.

SEO ranking tool Entry price Tracked keywords Refresh Cost per keyword
Google Search Console Free Every query you rank for Daily, with a lag Nothing
SEO PowerSuite Professional EUR 349 a year Unlimited, on your own machine When you run it Effectively nothing
Moz Pro Standard $99 a month 300 Weekly About $0.33
Semrush SEO $139 a month 500 Daily About $0.28
Ahrefs Lite $129 a month 750 Weekly on Lite About $0.17
Moz Pro Medium $179 a month 1,500 Weekly About $0.12
Semrush Pro+ $299 a month 1,500 Daily About $0.20

Moz and Semrush prices re-verified on 23 August 2026 and unchanged from the 9 August read, Ahrefs re-verified in dollars on 22 August 2026, SEO PowerSuite on 11 August 2026, from each vendor's own pricing page. Refresh frequency is the vendor's stated cadence for that tier and is the detail most comparisons drop.

Two things fall out of that table that the usual roundup will not tell you. The first is that the cheapest row is free and better than all of it for your own site: Search Console reports every query you actually rank for, measured by Google rather than sampled by a vendor. If you only need to know how your own pages are doing, a paid rank tracker is buying you convenience, competitor coverage and charting, not truth.

The second is that refresh cadence, not keyword count, is what the price gap actually buys. Semrush Pro+ and Moz Medium both track 1,500 keywords, and Semrush costs $120 more a month. Semrush checks them daily and Moz weekly. Whether that is worth $1,440 a year depends entirely on whether anyone acts on a position change within the week, and for most teams the honest answer is no. We work through both ladders in detail on Moz Pro vs Semrush, and the desktop option that removes the cap altogether in SEO PowerSuite vs Semrush. Below this whole price band sits a quieter group of audit-first tools, where Seobility gives away a usable free tier and SEOptimer starts at $29, compared against each other in Seobility, WooRank and SE Ranking alternatives.

One caveat that applies to every row: there is no single true ranking any more. Positions vary by location, device, personalization and whether an AI Overview occupies the top of the page, so a tracked position is one sample from a distribution rather than a fact. Treat the trend as the signal and the daily number as noise.

09 / Switching tools

Already paying for an SEO tool? What you actually gain by switching

Most people comparing SEO software are not starting from zero, they are already paying for something and want to know whether moving is worth the migration. Below the Ahrefs and Semrush price band sits a second market of audit-first and rank-tracking tools, and the honest answer for each is different. Sometimes the tool you have is fine and the money is better spent elsewhere. Here is where each one stands.

The short version for each: SEOptimer at $29 a month is the cheapest audit in the category and rarely worth leaving on price alone, and if you are buying a first tool rather than switching, the entry tiers are compared with their caps attached on SEO software for small business. Seobility is worth keeping until its free 1,000-page crawl stops being enough. WooRank is worth leaving only if you bought it for the client PDF and now need the fixes made. SE Ranking is a real suite at a mid-market price and usually worth staying on, though the bill is not the headline once white-label reporting and AI tracking are added, which we price out in full on our SE Ranking alternative and pricing breakdown. SEOprofiler shut down and its domain now serves an unrelated tool directory, so there is nothing left to leave, and the priced replacement for each part it bundled is on our SEOprofiler alternative comparison. And SEOmonitor and Zutrix are rank trackers rather than audit tools, which we do not replace, because we ship no ranking fetcher.

One more group arrives at this comparison without having chosen to shop at all. Adobe removed the built-in SEO feature from Marketo Engage on 1 April 2026 and told those customers to buy Semrush, so a large number of B2B marketing teams are now pricing a category they had bundled for free. Their decision is a narrower one than this page assumes, because the tile they lost scored individual pages rather than doing keyword research, and it is worked through with the seat arithmetic attached on our Marketo SEO tool alternative comparison and in what Semrush pricing works out to for a Marketo team.

What is a good alternative to WooRank?

SEOptimer at $29 a month is the closest like-for-like replacement and roughly a third of the price, with white labeling from its $39 tier, which we price out line by line in WooRank vs SEOptimer pricing. WooRank Pro is $89.99 a month for one project, a 2,500 page crawl and 50 tracked keywords, which is the narrowest allowance in this group. If you want more site rather than a cheaper report, SE Ranking Core covers 10 projects and 2,000 daily keywords.

What tools are similar to WooRank?

Four sit in the same audit-first bracket: Seobility, SEOptimer, SE Ranking and Sitechecker. All four crawl a site and return a scored, prioritized issue list, and all four are sold well below the Ahrefs and Semrush band. They differ mainly on who they are sold to. SEOptimer and WooRank are built for agencies handing a branded PDF to a prospect. Seobility and SE Ranking are built for whoever owns the site. If you are buying for a client roster rather than for one property, the same field priced on client sites and seats instead of features is on SEO software for agencies.

Is it worth switching audit tools at all?

Often not. These tools produce a similar shape of output, so migrating between them usually buys a different interface rather than a different answer. The switch that does pay is a change of category: moving from a tool that lists problems to one that writes the corrected copy. That is a different purchase, not a cheaper version of the same one.

Each of those deserves more than a sentence, and each has its own published quotas, entry price and migration catch. We work through all seven side by side, with the prices read off every vendor's own page and the two shutdowns documented, on the Seobility alternative and tools like WooRank comparison. That is the page to read if you are switching rather than shopping.

WooRank Pro and SEOptimer prices read 12 August 2026, SE Ranking re-verified 31 August 2026. WooRank's own pricing page contradicts itself on its Pro API allowance and its Premium crawl limit, so neither is quoted here.

Stay where you are if

Your tool answers the question you actually have. If you needed a crawler and you have one, a second dashboard will not move a ranking. Seobility's free tier and Search Console together cover most small sites completely.

Switch when

The issue list has been sitting there for three months. That is a writing problem wearing an auditing costume, and no amount of extra reporting clears it.

Add, do not replace

Rank tracking and link research are jobs we do not do. If those are why you pay your current vendor, keep them and treat us as the writing layer, not the replacement.

We keep a longer head-to-head for the audit-first group, covering Seobility, WooRank, SEOptimer and SE Ranking against each other rather than against us, on the Seobility alternative page. If the tool you are leaving is Moz, the Moz alternative and Moz competitors comparison covers the whole Moz stack including MozBar and Link Explorer, and Majestic SEO vs Semrush covers the two link indexes if backlinks are what you are really shopping for. The AI-native tools, from agentic on-page platforms to AI visibility trackers, sit in their own table on AI SEO tools compared.

10 / Asked and answered

The questions buyers actually ask

What are the best SEO tools in 2026?

For competitive research and backlinks, Ahrefs and Semrush are still the reference tools. For content optimization, Surfer. For technical crawls, Screaming Frog. For your own ranking data, Google Search Console, free. For deploying fixes across client sites you cannot edit, OTTO SEO. For turning an audit into the finished fix, Seomake. Most teams end up with two, not one.

Which SEO tool is best for beginners?

Start with Google Search Console, which is free and shows the queries you already rank for. Pair it with one tool that tells you what to change. A beginner does not need a link index the size of Ahrefs; they need to know which page to fix next and what to write on it.

Do I need Semrush and Ahrefs, or just one?

Just one, for almost everybody. Their core overlap is large: keyword data, rank tracking, site audits and a backlink index. Ahrefs has the edge on link data, Semrush on breadth and paid-search features. Paying for both is a duplication most teams cannot justify.

What is the difference between an SEO tool and an AI SEO tool?

A classic SEO tool measures: it reports rankings, links, and a list of issues. An AI SEO tool produces: it writes the corrected title, the meta, the headings and the content. The first hands you a to-do list. The second hands you the work already done, for you to approve.

How much do SEO tools cost per month?

Entry plans cluster between about $50 and $150 a month. The Semrush SEO plan is $139, Ahrefs Lite starts at $129, Surfer entry is around 49 euros, Search Atlas with OTTO starts at $99, and Seomake starts at $49. Agency tiers run from roughly $250 to $1,000. The real cost is usually the stack, not the single tool.

Are free SEO tools good enough?

Google Search Console is genuinely essential and free, and it is the only tool with your true ranking data. Beyond it, free tiers are demos: they cap the crawl, the keywords or the exports. If SEO is a revenue channel for you, the paid tier pays for itself in a single recovered page.

What is the best SEO software?

Semrush, if you want one subscription to cover the widest range of the job, at $139 a month for the entry SEO plan. Ahrefs wins on link data, Moz Pro is the cheapest credible full suite from $49, and Google Search Console beats all of them for reporting your own results, at no cost.

What are the best paid SEO tools?

For most US business teams: Semrush from $139 a month for breadth, Ahrefs from $129 for backlinks, Moz Pro from $49 for suite coverage on a budget, and Surfer from about 49 euros for content work. Paying mainly buys competitor data, refresh frequency and seats, not more accurate numbers.

What is the best SEO platform?

Platform usually means one login covering research, tracking, audits and reporting for a whole team. On that definition Semrush and SE Ranking are the strongest, with SE Ranking noticeably cheaper per project. At the enterprise end Conductor competes, but it publishes no prices at all.

What is the best SEO analysis tool?

For technical analysis, Screaming Frog, which is free under 500 URLs and has no real rival for crawl depth. For on-page analysis against a target keyword, Seobility has the best free tier and Seomake writes the corrected copy rather than only scoring it. They answer different questions.

What is the best SEO software for Mac?

Almost all of them, because the category moved to the browser years ago. Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz, Surfer and Seomake run anywhere. The only tool where this genuinely matters is Screaming Frog, which is a desktop application, and it ships a native macOS build alongside Windows and Ubuntu.

What is the best SEO ranking tool?

Google Search Console, and it is free. It reports every query your site actually appeared for, measured by Google rather than sampled by a vendor. Paid rank trackers buy you three things Search Console will not give you: daily granularity, competitor positions, and charting you can hand a client. Among those, Ahrefs Lite is the cheapest per tracked keyword at roughly $0.17.

What is a good Seobility alternative?

If you outgrew the free tier and want the same job done bigger, SEOptimer at $29 a month is the cheapest step up and SE Ranking is the fullest suite. If the issue list itself is the problem, because it keeps growing and nobody works through it, an AI SEO tool that writes the corrected copy is a different purchase, not a bigger version of the same one.

Who is the biggest SEO software competitor to Semrush?

Ahrefs, on data, and Moz Pro on price. Every serious SEO software competitor in this ranking splits along the same line: Ahrefs invests in the link index, Semrush invests in breadth of tools, and Moz undercuts both on the entry tier. Two competitors that used to appear in this list no longer exist as products, which is worth knowing before you shortlist from an old article.

How is this SEO tools ranking put together?

By published price against published limits, nothing else. Every figure in this SEO tools ranking was read off the vendor's own pricing page on the date shown next to the table, not copied from a review site or an affiliate roundup. Where a vendor does not publish a number, such as Moz on extra seats or Semrush on included seats, this page says so rather than estimating it.

Is there a better alternative to SEOmonitor?

It depends which half you use. SEOmonitor is built around rank tracking with forecasting and client reporting for agencies, and SE Ranking or Moz Pro cover that ground for less. If what you actually want is the work done rather than forecast, that is a different category and a different shortlist.
