Best Ahrefs alternatives for small SEO agencies: what five seats actually cost on each tool

For a five-person agency the best Ahrefs alternative is Semrush at $319 a month all in, against $489 for the same five people on Ahrefs Standard. Mangools Agency is cheaper still and covers six users with no per-seat charge, though it bills in euros. The reason the gap is that wide is not the headline price. It is that Ahrefs caps how many seats a plan may hold at all.

Most comparisons of Ahrefs alternatives are written for one person deciding what to put on a personal card. Agencies have a different problem, and it shows up on the second hire rather than the first. Everything below is priced for a team of five, with every figure read off the vendor's own pricing page in the last few days.

No account. No card. Real output in about 20 seconds.

How many users can you have on Ahrefs?

Every paid Ahrefs tier includes exactly one user, and each tier sets a hard maximum on how many extra seats you may add. Lite allows two. Standard allows five. Advanced allows ten. Only Enterprise is unlimited, and Enterprise starts at $1,499 a month on an annual commitment.

That cap is the part that catches agencies out, because it is a limit rather than a price. A four-person agency cannot buy Ahrefs Lite at $129 and pay for three extra seats. Lite will not hold four people at any price, so the fourth hire moves the whole team to Standard at $249 before a single additional seat is purchased. Growing from three people to four raises the floor by $120 a month.

Here is the same five-person team priced across the tools agencies normally shortlist. Seat costs are included, because a seat you are contractually required to buy is not optional.

Total monthly cost of five user seats across Ahrefs and its main alternatives, August 2026
Tool and plan Plan price Extra seats needed Five people, per month
Ahrefs Standard $249 4 at $60 each $489
Semrush SEO $139 4 at $45 each $319
Moz Pro Medium $179 3 at $49 each $326
Moz Pro Large $299 2 at $49 each $397
Mangools Agency EUR 97.70, billed annually 0, five included EUR 97.70

Ahrefs and Mangools read 24 August 2026. Semrush and Moz read 23 August 2026. Ahrefs Lite is absent because its two-seat cap cannot hold five people. Mangools and the euro figures are not converted, because the exchange rate on your statement will not match whatever rate we picked today.

Why Semrush usually wins this specific comparison

On raw data Ahrefs is still the better link tool, and an agency that sells link building should think hard before leaving. On agency economics Semrush wins twice over. It is $170 a month cheaper for five people, which is roughly $2,040 a year, and it refreshes rank tracking daily on every plan from $139 up.

The refresh rate matters more for agencies than for anyone else, because agencies report. Ahrefs updates Rank Tracker weekly on all five tiers including the $1,499 one. So do Moz and Ubersuggest. Semrush is the only major suite in this category on a daily cycle, and Mangools matches it only on its top Agency plan. If a client asks on Wednesday why a page moved, weekly data cannot answer.

Semrush also folds in paid search, social and PR data, which means the monthly client report comes out of one subscription instead of three. That consolidation is usually worth more to a small agency than index depth is, unless index depth is the service being sold. The full ladder for both is in the Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison.

The case for Mangools, and the catch

Mangools Agency is the outlier in the table by an order of magnitude, and the specification is not what the price suggests. It includes five extra seats, unlimited tracked domains, 1,500 tracked keywords on a daily refresh, and API plus MCP access. Ahrefs caps API rows per request by tier and Semrush puts its API behind the top plan with units that expire, so a budget tool shipping API access on every plan is genuinely unusual.

Two catches. The first is currency: Mangools bills in euros, so a US agency pays whatever the card network converts on the day, plus any foreign transaction fee, and the number on the statement moves month to month. The second is depth. Mangools is not competing with the Ahrefs backlink index and does not claim to be. For keyword research, rank tracking and client reporting it is more than adequate. For a backlink audit on a large domain it is not the same product.

The honest split is that Mangools replaces the half of Ahrefs an agency opens daily and does not replace the half it opens monthly. Whether that trade works depends on whether link research is billable work or background reading. There is a fuller breakdown of who each tool suits on the Ahrefs alternative comparison, including which vendors bill in euros and which ship an API.

The second subscription agencies get wrong

Once the research suite is chosen, most agencies buy a second tool that overlaps it. Two research suites is the most common wasted line item in this category, usually bought because one account manager prefers a different interface.

The gap worth spending on is the other one. Every suite here will tell you a title tag is too long, that a page has no H1, that a cluster has a content gap. None of them writes the replacement. That work lands in a backlog and, in a five-person agency running twenty client sites, it is the backlog rather than the research that decides how much gets shipped in a quarter. At that scale the constraint stops being the data and starts being who picks up the ticket, which is worth solving with something that routes each piece of work to whoever actually has capacity rather than a shared spreadsheet.

The production half is what Seomake does: hand it a URL and the keyword the page should own and it returns the rewritten title under 60 characters, a meta description in the 140 to 160 band, a heading outline and an opening paragraph. It is a much narrower tool than anything else on this page and it has no link index at all. Paired with one research suite, it is the second subscription that does not duplicate the first.

What to buy, by team size

One to three people, links matter: stay on Ahrefs Lite at $129 while the seat cap still fits, and re-price the day you hire a fourth person rather than after.

Four to six people, general SEO: Semrush SEO at $139 plus seats, or Mangools Agency if euro billing is acceptable and you can live without a deep link index.

Reporting-heavy client work: Semrush, for the daily refresh alone. Weekly positions and a Monday client call are a bad combination at any price.

Backlink audits as a paid service: keep Ahrefs, or add Majestic at 46.99 euros for Lite if links are the only thing you need from a second tool. The wider field is covered in the SEO ranking tools roundup, and Moz competitors covers the third suite most shortlists include.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Ahrefs alternative for an agency?

Semrush, on seat economics. Five people on Semrush SEO cost $319 a month against $489 on Ahrefs Standard, and Semrush refreshes rank tracking daily where Ahrefs is weekly on every tier. If the budget is tighter than that, Mangools Agency covers six users for one flat fee, though it bills in euros.

How many users can you have on Ahrefs?

Fewer than most agencies expect. Every paid tier includes one user. Lite allows a maximum of two extra seats, so three people in total. Standard allows five extra, Advanced ten, and only Enterprise is unlimited. The cap is a hard limit, not a price, so a four-person team cannot buy Lite at all.

Is Ahrefs or Semrush better for a small agency?

Semrush, for most small agencies. It is cheaper per seat, refreshes positions daily, and covers paid search and social so client reporting comes from one subscription. Ahrefs wins if backlink research is the billable service you sell, because its index is still the deepest available.

Can multiple people share one Ahrefs account?

Sharing one login across a team breaches the terms of service and Ahrefs enforces it, so treat seat costs as real rather than optional. This is the single line item agencies most often forget when they compare a $129 plan to a $139 one and conclude the cheaper number wins.

What is the cheapest SEO tool for a small agency?

Mangools Agency, at 37.70 to 97.70 euros a month billed annually depending on tier, includes five extra seats and unlimited tracked domains with no per-seat charge. It is priced like a solo tool and specified like a team one. The trade is index depth against the bigger suites.

Do agencies need more than one SEO tool?

Usually two, rarely three. One research suite for keyword and backlink data, and one production tool that turns findings into shipped changes. The second subscription is where agencies waste money, because they buy a duplicate research suite instead of something that closes the backlog.

The short version

Price the team, not the plan. Ahrefs looks competitive at one seat and stops being competitive at four, partly on price and partly because its cheapest tier is not allowed to hold four people. Semrush is the safe agency default on cost and refresh rate, Mangools is the value play if euro billing does not bother you, and whatever you pick, spend the second subscription on shipping the fixes rather than on a second view of the same data. Ahrefs' own ladder, tier by tier, is on the Ahrefs pricing page.
