01 / THE STRAIGHT COMPARISON

Moz alternative: Moz vs Semrush vs Ahrefs, and the Moz Pro alternative that writes the fix

We sell a competing tool, so read this with that in mind. Moz beats us on several things and the table says which. Every Moz price and feature here was read off moz.com on 16 July 2026, not copied from a listicle.

02 / The short answer

Moz measures your SEO. The gap it leaves is the writing.

Moz Pro is a research and measurement suite: Domain Authority, a 40 trillion link index, rank tracking, site crawls and, since 2026, real AI visibility tracking. What it does not do is produce the corrected page. It tells you a title is weak and leaves you to rewrite it. Seomake is the opposite shape: no link index at all, but it audits a page against the keyword it should own and hands back the finished title, meta, headings and copy. Swap Moz for Seomake if your backlog is the bottleneck. Keep Moz if Domain Authority and link research are what you actually log in for.

A lot of the "Moz alternative" pages you will find still claim Moz has no AI features. That was true in 2025 and is not true now, which is worth knowing before you pay for a tool on the strength of a comparison nobody has updated.

Read the rows where we lose, because there are several. No backlink index, no authority score, no local listings, and nothing like Moz Academy. If link building is your growth lever, Moz or Ahrefs will serve you better than we will, and we would rather say so here than after you have paid.

04 / What Moz costs

Moz Pro pricing in July 2026, and what the AI extras add

The headline number is not the number you pay if you use the AI tooling, because that part is metered separately.

Moz Pro plan Monthly Paid yearly Tracked prompts AI content briefs
Individual entry plan $49 Not published Not included Not included
Standard $99 $79/mo 50 2 per month
Medium $179 $143/mo 100 10 per month
Large $299 $239/mo 200 50 per month

Two details worth pricing in. Extra AI Visibility Dashboards are $20 each and extra prompts are $50 per 100, so a team tracking a decent prompt set on Standard can pass the Medium price without meaning to. And Moz counts users per tier: Standard is one seat, Medium two.

For reference, our own AI SEO software pricing is $49 Starter, $149 Growth and $499 Agency, flat, with unlimited audits and no metered add-ons. At the entry tier Moz and Seomake cost the same $49. At the mid tier Moz is genuinely cheaper than we are: $179 against our $149 monthly looks close, but Moz Standard at $99 undercuts us outright if a single seat is all you need.

05 / Moz vs Semrush vs Ahrefs

Moz vs Semrush vs Ahrefs: which of the three to buy

These three overlap more than their marketing suggests. All three do keywords, rank tracking, crawls and backlinks. The differences that survive contact with a real workflow are below.

Tool Entry price Best at Buy it if
Moz Pro $99/mo Standard Domain Authority, education, an approachable UI You want a shared authority benchmark and the best SEO training anywhere
Semrush $139.95/mo Pro Breadth: SEO, ads, PR and social in one place You run paid and organic together and want one bill
Ahrefs From $129/mo The deepest backlink index and competitor research Link building is the lever that moves your rankings
Seomake From $49/mo Turning an audit into the finished rewrite You already know what is broken and never get round to fixing it

Semrush and Ahrefs entry prices as published July 2026. The honest summary: if you are choosing between Moz, Semrush and Ahrefs, you are choosing a research tool, and any of the three will do that job. We are not in that contest. We are the thing you add when the research has already told you what to fix. The full breakdowns live on our Semrush alternative and Ahrefs alternative pages, and the wider field on best SEO tools.

06 / Where Moz wins

Four things Moz does that we do not

Domain Authority as a shared language

DA is not a Google ranking factor and Moz has never claimed it is. It is still the number your client, your prospect and your link partner all understand without a preamble. That shared vocabulary has real value, and no amount of arguing about its accuracy replaces it. We do not have an equivalent and are not building one.

A 40 trillion link index

Link Explorer is a serious database with twenty years of history behind it. If you need to know who links to a competitor and what changed last quarter, that is a data problem, and data problems are solved by owning the index. We do not own one, so we do not pretend to answer those questions.

AI visibility tracking that actually measures

Moz tracks prompts across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, reports AI Citations data and shows AI Overviews by keyword. That is genuine measurement of whether answer engines mention you. Our own generative engine optimization work shapes the page to earn the citation, but we do not track prompts.

Moz Academy and Whiteboard Friday

The Beginner's Guide to SEO has probably taught more people this discipline than any other single resource. If you are onboarding a junior or learning yourself, that library is worth money on its own. Our documentation is documentation. It is not a curriculum.

07 / Who should switch

Switch, stay, or run both

Three honest outcomes, and only one of them involves you cancelling anything.

Switch to Seomake

Your backlog is the problem

You have a list of weak titles and thin pages you have been meaning to fix for months. Another dashboard confirming it changes nothing. An audit that ends in written copy clears it. Start with the SEO audit tool.

Stay on Moz

Links and authority are your lever

You live in Link Explorer, you report DA to clients, or you run local listings through Moz Local. None of that has a Seomake equivalent. Staying is the right call and we have nothing to sell you.

Run both

You want research and execution

Moz finds it and tracks it, Seomake writes it. Most teams doing this keep Moz Standard at $99 rather than paying $179 for Medium, and spend the difference on the half that ships. Our SEO automation page shows the loop.

One thing worth being blunt about: if you are on Moz because of Domain Authority, and DA is the metric your reporting is built on, do not switch. You will spend the first month rebuilding reports and the second month explaining why the number went away. That is a bad trade for both of us.

08 / Asked and answered

The questions buyers actually ask about Moz

What is a good alternative to Moz?

It depends which half of Moz you actually use. If you use Link Explorer and Domain Authority, Ahrefs is the closest swap. If you use the whole marketing suite, Semrush. If what you really need is the audit turned into finished copy, that is what Seomake does. Most people replace one half, not both.

How much does Moz cost?

Moz Pro runs $99 a month for Standard, $179 for Medium and $299 for Large, billed monthly. Paid yearly those drop to $79, $143 and $239. There is also a $49 entry plan for individuals. AI extras are metered on top: $20 per extra visibility dashboard, $50 per 100 extra prompts.

Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?

No. Domain Authority is a Moz metric, not a Google one, and Google has never used it in its algorithm. DA correlates with rankings because both are built on backlinks, so it reports link strength rather than creating it. It is a useful shared benchmark, not a lever you can pull.

Does Moz have AI and GEO tools?

Yes, and any comparison telling you otherwise is out of date. Moz Pro ships AI Visibility Dashboards, AI Citations data, tracked prompts across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, AI Overviews by keyword and AI Content Briefs. Moz measures your AI visibility properly. It stops short of writing the page.

Is Moz better than Semrush?

Moz is easier to learn and cheaper at the entry tier. Semrush is wider, covering paid search, PR and social alongside SEO. For pure link data both trail Ahrefs. Pick Moz if you want Domain Authority and the best SEO education in the industry, Semrush if you run paid and organic together.

Is Moz Pro worth it?

If you need a shared authority metric, a 40 trillion link index and genuinely good training material, yes. Moz has twenty years of data behind it. The honest caveat is the same one every research suite carries: it tells you what is wrong and hands the rewriting back to you.

Is there a free Moz alternative?

Partly. A free Moz Community account gives limited MozBar, Keyword Explorer and Link Explorer access, and Google Search Console is free and holds your real ranking data. Free tiers cap the crawl and the exports, so they work for a one-off check rather than a channel you depend on.

Can I use Moz and Seomake together?

That is the common setup. Moz finds the opportunity and tracks whether the ranking moved. Seomake writes the corrected title, meta, headings and the thin section underneath. They sit on opposite sides of the same workflow, so most teams running both keep Moz Standard rather than upgrading it.

09 / Run it

Run the audit Moz hands back to you

Paste a URL and the keyword it should rank for. Seomake audits the live page and writes the corrected title, meta and headings. No account, no card, no credits.
