Semrush vs Ahrefs: pricing, which is better in 2026, and the real difference between them
We sell a smaller, cheaper tool that competes with neither of them on data, so read this as a comparison written by an interested party. Every price and plan limit below was read off ahrefs.com and semrush.com on 26 July 2026, not copied from an affiliate roundup.
Ahrefs is cheaper for research. Semrush is cheaper for teams and covers more channels.
Buy Ahrefs if SEO research is the job: it starts at $129 a month against Semrush's $139, includes 750 tracked keywords to Semrush's 500, and gives 20 projects at $249 where Semrush gives 15 at $299. Buy Semrush if SEO is one channel among several, because it also covers advertising, social, content and local in the same subscription, and extra seats cost less.
That is the whole decision for most buyers, and the usual "which has better data" argument is a distraction. Both estimate search volume from clickstream panels, both are directionally right and absolutely wrong, and both publish link index sizes that leapfrog each other with every press release. You will not notice the difference. You will notice paying $299 for fewer tracked keywords than a $249 plan gives you.
The one line item worth reading carefully in 2026 is AI visibility tracking, because the two vendors gate it very differently and most comparison posts get it backwards. Section 04 has the actual numbers.
Last updated July 2026. Ahrefs and Semrush pricing, plan limits and seat costs verified against ahrefs.com/pricing and semrush.com/prices on 26 July 2026.
Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing in July 2026, plan by plan
Two ladders that look similar and are not. Ahrefs prices per project and per tracked keyword. Semrush prices per site monitored and per keyword tracked daily, and it publishes an annual rate that Ahrefs does not advertise on the pricing page. Start with Ahrefs.
| Ahrefs plan | Monthly | Projects | Tracked keywords | Tracked AI prompts | Seats | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29 | Limited | Limited | None | 1 | Occasional lookups, not a working plan |
| Lite | $129 | 5 | 750 | 5 | 1 (+2 at $40 each) | Solo SEO or a small in-house team |
| Standard | $249 | 20 | 2,000 | 10 | 1 (+5 at $60 each) | Consultants and small agencies |
| Advanced | $449 | 50 | 5,000 | 20 | 1 (+10 at $80 each) | Agencies running many client sites |
| Enterprise | From $1,499 | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom | API access, SSO, unlimited history |
Ahrefs geolocates its pricing page. US visitors see the dollar list prices above; European visitors are quoted 119, 229 and 419 euros for the same three plans, with additional seats at 37.40, 56.10 and 74.80 euros. Ahrefs also runs a genuinely free tier, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which crawls and reports on a domain you can verify ownership of.
| Semrush plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Sites | Keywords daily | AI prompts | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | $139 | $117.33 | 5 | 500 | Not included | SEO only, no AI visibility tracking |
| Starter | $199 | $165.17 | 5 | 500 | 50 per day | The real entry point if you want AI tracking |
| Pro+ | $299 | $248.17 | 15 | 1,500 | 100 per day | Small agencies and multi-brand teams |
| Advanced | $549 | $455.67 | 40 | 5,000 | 200 per day | Agencies with heavy reporting needs |
Annual billing on Semrush saves up to 17%, and Semrush charges from $45 a month for each additional user seat. That number matters more than the headline price once you are past one person. Ahrefs includes one seat on every tier and charges roughly $40, $60 and $80 per extra user on Lite, Standard and Advanced respectively, so a three-person team on Ahrefs Lite pays about $209 a month while the same team on Semrush's SEO plan pays about $229.
Compare either figure with what on-page work alone costs. Our own AI SEO software pricing runs $49 Starter, $149 Growth and $499 Agency with unlimited page audits, because we do not carry a link index and have nothing to meter. That is not a like-for-like comparison and it is not meant to be one. It is the difference between buying data and buying finished work.
AI visibility tracking: the line item that decides this in 2026
Both vendors now sell prompt tracking, the feature that tells you whether ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity mention your brand when someone asks a buying question. They gate it in opposite ways, and the popular summary going around, that Ahrefs bundles AI cheaply while Semrush locks it behind a higher tier, is only half right.
| Cheapest plan with prompt tracking | Price | Prompts included | Cost per tracked prompt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Lite | $129/mo | 5 | About $25.80 |
| Ahrefs Standard | $249/mo | 10 | About $24.90 |
| Ahrefs Advanced | $449/mo | 20 | About $22.45 |
| Semrush Starter | $199/mo | 50 per day | About $3.98 |
| Semrush Pro+ | $299/mo | 100 per day | About $2.99 |
| Semrush Advanced | $549/mo | 200 per day | About $2.75 |
Ahrefs lets you touch the feature $70 cheaper. Semrush gives you ten times as much of it. Five tracked prompts is a demo: it covers your brand name, two category queries and a competitor, and then you are out. Fifty is enough to run an actual program across a product line. If AI visibility is a box you want ticked, Ahrefs wins on price. If it is a thing you plan to manage, Semrush is roughly six times cheaper per prompt and the $70 gap disappears immediately.
Ahrefs also sells its AI monitoring separately as Brand Radar, listed from 179 euros a month standalone, which tells you how the company values the feature when it is not being used to make a $129 plan look complete. Dedicated trackers price similarly: Profound starts around $99 a month on annual billing for a single engine, and Otterly.AI starts at $29 for 15 prompts. We compare that whole category on the AI visibility tracker page.
Worth saying plainly, since we sell in this space: tracking is measurement, not improvement. A prompt tracker tells you that Gemini names three competitors and not you. It does not restructure the page so a model can lift a clean passage out of it. That second job is what answer engine optimization covers, and it is work you do in your content rather than in a dashboard.
Where each one genuinely wins, feature by feature
Ignore the index-size arms race. Both companies quote link totals in the tens of trillions, both revise the number upward whenever the other one does, and no working SEO has ever made a purchase decision that survived contact with those figures. The differences that show up in daily use are these.

Read the pattern rather than the rows. Semrush is a marketing department's tool and Ahrefs is an SEO's tool. If the person holding the credit card also runs paid search and social, Semrush consolidates four subscriptions and the price stops looking high. If the person holding the card does SEO and only SEO, most of Semrush is dead weight they are paying for, and that is the real argument for Ahrefs.
Our separate Semrush alternative and Ahrefs alternative pages go deeper on each one individually, including where they beat us.
Semrush vs Ahrefs vs Moz, and where a $49 tool fits
Moz is the third name in every one of these searches and it deserves better than being an afterthought, because it is materially cheaper than both and has closed much of the AI gap. Prices below come from each vendor's own pricing page, Moz on 16 July 2026 and the other three on 26 July 2026.
| Tool | Entry price | Strongest at | Buy it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | $129/mo Lite, $29 Starter | Link research and keyword work per dollar | SEO is the job and you want the best research limits for the money |
| Semrush | $139/mo SEO, $199 with AI tracking | Breadth across SEO, ads, social and local | You run several channels and want one bill and one report |
| Moz Pro | $99/mo Standard, $79 billed yearly | Rank tracking and crawls at the lowest credible price | Budget is the constraint and you need the fundamentals covered |
| Seomake | $49/mo Starter, unlimited audits | Writing the corrected page, not measuring it | You already know the target and want the finished rewrite |
The last row is a different category and we are not pretending otherwise. Seomake has no link index, no keyword database and no competitor research. It reads a page you point it at, scores it against the query it should own, and writes the corrected title, meta, headings and copy. If you cancel Ahrefs you lose your data. If you cancel us you keep every change, because the change went into your source. See the Moz alternative comparison for the full Moz breakdown, or the best SEO tools roundup for the wider field.
Semrush or Ahrefs: pick by what your week looks like
Buy Ahrefs if
- Link prospecting and competitor backlink analysis are a weekly habit, not an occasional audit.
- You are one or two people and the per-seat math still works in your favor.
- You manage a lot of properties. Twenty projects at $249 is the best limit-per-dollar on this page.
- You want to be in and out of a tool quickly rather than learning a suite.
- You want a real free tier for your own domain before paying anything.
Buy Semrush if
- You are responsible for paid search or social as well, and consolidating tools is worth real money.
- You report to clients or executives monthly and want scheduled reporting that already looks finished.
- You want a serious AI visibility program, where 50 prompts a day beats 5 a month decisively.
- Your team is four or more people and $45 a seat undercuts the alternative.
- You work in a market where Semrush's US keyword database has the better coverage.
There is a third answer that suits more people than either vendor would like. Buy neither yet. If you have fewer than fifty pages, no link building program and no client to report to, a $139 research suite is solving a problem you do not have. Search Console is free and tells you what you actually rank for. Spend the budget on fixing the twenty pages sitting on page two instead, which is the job our SEO audit tool was built for.
Semrush vs Ahrefs, question by question
Semrush vs Ahrefs: which is better?
Ahrefs is better if your work is links, keyword research and multiple client sites, because its entry plan is cheaper and its project and keyword limits are more generous. Semrush is better if you need one subscription to cover SEO plus ads, social, PR and local. Neither is better in the abstract.
What is the difference between Semrush and Ahrefs?
Semrush is a broad marketing suite that happens to lead with SEO. Ahrefs is a research specialist built around a link and keyword index. The practical difference is breadth against depth: Semrush has far more tools, Ahrefs has a tighter interface and better limits per dollar for research work.
Is Semrush or Ahrefs cheaper?
Ahrefs is cheaper to enter at $129 a month against Semrush at $139, and it includes 750 tracked keywords to Semrush's 500. Semrush is cheaper for teams, because extra seats cost from $45 a month while Ahrefs charges $37 to $75 per additional user depending on tier.
Semrush vs Ahrefs pricing: what do the plans actually cost?
In July 2026 Ahrefs lists Lite $129, Standard $249 and Advanced $449 a month. Semrush lists SEO $139, Starter $199, Pro+ $299 and Advanced $549, dropping to $117.33, $165.17, $248.17 and $455.67 on annual billing. Ahrefs also sells a $29 Starter plan.
Is Semrush and Ahrefs the same?
No. They overlap heavily on keyword research, rank tracking, site audits and backlink analysis, which is why most teams buy one rather than both. They diverge on everything else: Semrush adds advertising, social and content marketing modules that Ahrefs does not attempt to compete with.
Do I need both Semrush and Ahrefs?
Almost nobody does. The overlap is roughly 70% of what either tool is used for day to day, so paying twice buys you a second opinion on keyword volume and a slightly different link index. Agencies that do pay for both usually use Ahrefs for link prospecting and Semrush for client reporting.
Semrush vs Ahrefs for keyword research: which has better data?
Both estimate volume from clickstream data and both are wrong in the same direction, usually within the same order of magnitude of each other. Ahrefs gives you 750 tracked keywords on the entry plan against Semrush's 500. For accuracy, treat either number as a relative signal and trust Search Console for absolutes.
Semrush vs Ahrefs vs Moz: which should a small team pick?
Moz Pro undercuts both at $99 a month and is the reasonable pick if budget is the binding constraint and you mainly need rank tracking and a site crawl. Ahrefs is the step up for serious link work. Semrush is the pick when SEO is one of five channels you run.
What is the best Semrush and Ahrefs alternative?
It depends what you stop needing. If you want the research index, there is no cheap substitute and you should buy one of them. If what you actually want is the fixes written for the pages you already have, that is a different and much smaller purchase, and Seomake starts at $49 a month.
Still weighing it? The honest sequence is to run the free options first. Verify your domain in Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, open a free Semrush account, and give each a week on a real task. Then read whether Semrush is worth it at $139 a month, which works through the same question from the cost side.
