Clearscope vs Semrush pricing for a content team, seats and the SEO Writing Assistant included

Clearscope Essentials costs $129 a month and lets your whole team in. The Semrush equivalent, the SEO Writing Assistant, sits on the Guru plan at $249.95 a month, and each extra user costs at least $45 a month more. So for one writer Clearscope is $120.95 a month cheaper, and for a team of five it is about $300 a month cheaper. Semrush earns the difference only if the same people also use its keyword research, rank tracking and site audits.

Every figure here was read on 18 September 2026 from the vendors' own pages: Clearscope's pricing page, and Semrush knowledge base articles 1547 and 814, which set out the SEO Toolkit plans and the Writing Assistant's limits. We checked because the comparison pages ranking for this question disagree with each other, and at least one still quotes Clearscope from $170 a month. We also sell an SEO tool, so weigh our conclusions with that in mind. The numbers can be checked on each vendor's site.

First, though, the more useful test. Run the page your content budget is supposed to be improving through an audit and see what is actually holding it back.

What Clearscope costs

Clearscope sells two self-serve plans. Essentials is $129 a month for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month. Business is $399 a month for 300 tracked queries, 300 pages, 50 topic explorations, the same 20 drafts and a dedicated account manager. Enterprise is quoted. Every plan includes unlimited users and unlimited projects, plus prompt tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini.

The part that matters for a team is the first line of that plan table: users, unlimited. Clearscope prices on how much content you run through it, not on how many people touch it. An editor, four freelancers and a client reviewer all cost the same $129. If you are still choosing between content graders rather than between Clearscope and a suite, we price it against Frase and MarketMuse in Frase vs Clearscope vs MarketMuse.

What Semrush costs for the same job

Semrush does not sell its writing tool on its own. Knowledge base article 1547 lists the SEO Writing Assistant in the Guru plan's extras, alongside Topic Research and Historical Data. Guru is $249.95 a month. Business, at $499.95, includes it too. On Pro, at $139.95, article 814 limits you to 2 documents per account, and that is a lifetime figure, not a monthly one.

On Guru you get unlimited documents, 5 plagiarism checks a month and 1,000 Smart Writer Words a month for the AI features: Rephrase, Compose and Ask AI. Those words go quickly. Expanding a sentence costs 2 words for every word in it, so a month's allowance expands about 500 words of copy. Another 10,000 words cost $20 a month. What you are buying is a good checker with a small amount of AI help, not a writer.

And Semrush charges per person. Additional users start at $45 a month each. That is the line that turns a close comparison into a lopsided one. We break down the rest of the Guru plan, including what it now sits under since Semrush renamed the ladder, on our Semrush Guru plan price page.

Clearscope vs Semrush for a team, priced by seat count

This is the table the ranking comparison pages leave out. It prices the cheapest way to get each tool's content grader into the hands of your whole team, per month, using Clearscope Essentials and Semrush Guru with extra users at the $45 starting rate.

Monthly cost of Clearscope Essentials and Semrush Guru by number of writers
Team Clearscope Essentials Semrush Guru Clearscope saves
1 writer $129 $249.95 $120.95
3 writers $129 at least $339.95 at least $210.95
5 writers $129 at least $429.95 at least $300.95
10 writers $129 at least $654.95 at least $525.95

Two honest caveats. First, Clearscope's Essentials limits are tight: 50 pages and 20 drafts a month is fine for a team publishing a few pieces a week, and too small for an agency running dozens of client briefs. Business at $399 fixes that, and it is still cheaper than Guru for any team of five or more. Second, the Semrush figure buys a lot that Clearscope does not: a keyword database, position tracking on 1,500 keywords, site audits on 15 projects and a backlink index. If your team uses those every week, the comparison is not really writing tool against writing tool.

Where Semrush is the better buy

If you already pay for Guru because your SEO lead lives in its keyword and tracking reports, the Writing Assistant is effectively free to you, and adding Clearscope on top only makes sense if seats are the constraint. Semrush also wins if your writers want everything inside Google Docs with plagiarism checks built in, or if your content work and your technical SEO work are done by the same two people. Where Clearscope is the better buy

Clearscope wins when writing is a team sport. Freelancers, editors and subject matter experts can all have their own login without a finance conversation. It also wins when writing is the only reason you were looking at Guru. Paying $249.95 a month, plus seats, for 15 sites of rank tracking nobody on the content team opens is the most common way this budget gets wasted. We price four more options, including Frase and Semrush's own Content Toolkit, on our Semrush SEO Writing Assistant alternatives page.

One more thing worth separating out. A content grader improves the article you are about to publish. For a lot of teams the bigger gap is what happens after publishing: the piece goes out once and never gets promoted, and that is a distribution problem that an AI marketing agent that runs campaigns on autopilot addresses better than a better score in the editor.

The pages neither tool reopens

Both products work on the draft. Neither looks at the forty articles you already published that sit on page three, because nobody opens those again. That is usually where the revenue is: pages that already have some authority and rank for the right query, just badly.

That is the gap SEOMake is built for. Paste a live URL and the keyword it should rank for. It scores the page, lists what is costing it the ranking, and writes the fix: a title under 60 characters with the keyword first, a meta description at the length Google renders, a heading outline built for the intent, an opening paragraph, and the terms the page is missing against what ranks now. Paid plans add a 400 to 700 word draft that follows the outline. Starter is $49 a month with unlimited audits and 20 drafts. There is no Google Docs sidebar and no plagiarism checker, so this is a different purchase, not a cheaper Clearscope. The plans are on our pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Clearscope cheaper than Semrush?

For writing, yes. Clearscope Essentials is $129 a month with unlimited users. The Semrush SEO Writing Assistant needs the Guru plan at $249.95, and every extra user costs from $45 a month. For a single writer the gap is $120.95 a month, and it widens with every person you add.

How much does Clearscope cost?

Read on 18 September 2026, Clearscope Essentials is $129 a month and Business is $399 a month, with Enterprise quoted. Both paid plans include unlimited users and projects and 20 drafts a month. Essentials covers 50 pages and 50 tracked queries, Business 300 of each.

Does Semrush have a Clearscope equivalent?

The closest is the SEO Writing Assistant, a real-time content checker with Google Docs, WordPress and Word add-ons. It comes with the Guru plan at $249.95 a month. Semrush also sells the Content Toolkit at $60 a month, but that generates new articles rather than grading a draft against the SERP.

Clearscope vs Semrush, which is better for a content team?

Clearscope, on cost and seats, because a team of any size pays $129. Semrush is better if the same team also needs keyword research, rank tracking and site audits, since Guru bundles those with the writing tool. Buying Guru only to write is the expensive way to get a content grader.

Can I use Clearscope and Semrush together?

Many teams do: Semrush for research and tracking, Clearscope for the writing. That setup costs $129 on top of whichever Semrush plan you hold. If you are on Pro at $139.95, the pair is $268.95 a month, which is about the price of Guru alone and gives the writers unlimited seats.

Clearscope prices and plan limits were read from clearscope.io/pricing on 18 September 2026. Semrush plan prices and contents were read from semrush.com/kb/1547-seo-toolkit-pricing-and-plans, and Writing Assistant limits from semrush.com/kb/814-seo-writing-assistant, the same day. The $45 starting price for extra Semrush users is from Semrush's pricing page. Vendor prices change. If yours differs, trust the checkout.
