01 / A WRITING TOOL INSIDE A $249.95 PLAN

Semrush SEO Writing Assistant alternatives and what the assistant costs on each plan

The Semrush SEO Writing Assistant is not sold on its own. Full access sits on the Guru plan at $249.95 a month, and Pro users get 2 documents, in total. Below are the real plan limits from Semrush's own knowledge base and five alternatives priced from their pricing pages. Or test the fix straight away on a page of yours that should rank.

No account. No card. Real output in about 20 seconds.

02 / The short answer

The best Semrush SEO Writing Assistant alternative depends on who is writing

The Semrush SEO Writing Assistant comes with the Guru plan at $249.95 a month. It gives unlimited documents, 1,000 AI words a month and 5 plagiarism checks. On Pro at $139.95 you get 2 documents per account, ever. So the real question is not whether the tool is good. It is whether you want to pay for 15 sites of rank tracking and research to get a writing checker.

If you do not, the priced alternatives are: Clearscope Essentials at $129 a month for a team, because users are unlimited; Frase Starter at $49 a month for a solo writer; Semrush's own Content Toolkit at $60 if you want to stay with Semrush; and SEOMake Starter at $49 if your problem is live pages that are not ranking rather than new drafts that need a score.

03 / Checked at source

What the SEO Writing Assistant actually includes on each Semrush plan

Most alternative lists skip the one thing a buyer needs first: what you get from Semrush before you look elsewhere. We read it from Semrush's own knowledge base on 18 September 2026. Article 1547, the SEO Toolkit pricing page, lists the SEO Writing Assistant under the Guru plan's extras, beside Topic Research and Historical Data. Article 814, the Writing Assistant's own documentation, sets the limits.

Free users and Pro subscribers can create 2 documents per account. Guru and Business subscribers get unlimited documents. The plagiarism checker allows 3 checks in total on Pro, 5 a month on Guru and 10 a month on Business. The AI features, Rephrase, Compose and Ask AI, run on a separate allowance called Smart Writer Words: 500 for the lifetime of a Pro account, 1,000 a month on Guru, 2,000 a month on Business. Expanding a sentence costs 2 of those words for every word in it, so Guru's monthly allowance expands about 500 words of copy.

Two things have also moved on Semrush's side. Its feature page for the tool, semrush.com/features/seo-writing-assistant/, now returns a 308 redirect to a general content marketing page. And the knowledge base article for the SEO Content Template, number 590, redirects to article 814, which does not use the word template once. If you are looking for where the template documentation went, that is where, and it is no longer there.

None of this makes the tool bad. It is a solid real-time checker for readability, tone, keyword coverage and originality, with add-ons for Google Docs, WordPress and Microsoft Word. It is simply priced as a feature of a research plan, and the AI allowance is small enough that it cannot be your main writing tool. We cover the Guru plan in full on our Semrush Guru plan price page.

04 / Six options, priced

Semrush SEO Writing Assistant alternatives compared on price, seats and limits

Semrush, Clearscope and Frase figures were read from each vendor's own pages on 18 September 2026. Content Toolkit figures come from our read on 10 September 2026. Surfer's pricing page geolocates, so it was re-read from a United States connection in September 2026 and shows the dollar prices an American buyer sees.

Semrush SEO Writing Assistant and five alternatives compared on entry price, writing allowance, seats, strengths and weaknesses
Tool Price to get it Writing allowance Seats Where it wins Where it falls short
Semrush SEO Writing Assistant $249.95 a month (Guru) Unlimited documents, 1,000 AI words a month, 5 plagiarism checks 1, extra users from $45 a month You already use Guru for rank tracking and research, so the writing check is effectively included Buying it for writing alone means paying for 15 sites of SEO data you will not open
Semrush Content Toolkit $60 a month AI article drafts, 5 SEO-boosted articles a month, brand voices, WordPress export 1, extra users $20 a month Cheapest way to stay inside Semrush for writing A separate product from the Writing Assistant, built to generate new articles rather than check existing ones
Clearscope Essentials $129 a month 20 drafts, 50 pages, 50 tracked queries, 20 topic explorations Unlimited users Editorial teams with many writers, since seats cost nothing extra Page and query allowances are small for the price
Frase Starter $49 a month, $39 billed yearly 10 articles and 50 audit pages a month, 1 site 1, extra seats $29 on higher plans Solo writers who want briefs, drafts and publishing in one tool One site only; a team needs Professional at $129
Surfer Discovery $59 a month, Standard $119, or $49 and $99 billed yearly Content Editor scoring against the live SERP Varies by plan Score-driven optimization while you write Plans meter documents, so heavy use pushes you up a tier
SEOMake Starter $49 a month, $490 a year Unlimited page audits with rewritten title, meta, outline and intro, plus 20 drafts of 400 to 700 words Priced per plan, not per seat Fixing pages that are already live and not ranking No keyword database and no plagiarism checker

The table includes where each competitor beats us, because it does. Clearscope's unlimited seats are the best deal here for a content team of five or more, and Frase does far more article generation per dollar than we do. Clearscope is priced seat by seat against Semrush in Clearscope vs Semrush pricing, and the Content Toolkit is covered in detail on our Content Toolkit and ContentShake AI pricing page.

05 / The numbers to budget

Four figures from Semrush's own documentation that decide this

These come straight from knowledge base articles 1547 and 814. They are the reason most people searching for an alternative started searching.

$249.95

the cheapest plan with real access

Semrush knowledge base article 1547 lists the SEO Writing Assistant in the Guru plan's "Plus" block. Below Guru you get a taste of it, not the tool.

2

documents, ever, on Pro

Article 814 caps free users and Pro subscribers at 2 documents per account. That is a lifetime figure, not a monthly one, so a Pro user runs out after two articles and never gets them back.

1,000

AI words a month on Guru

Rephrase, Compose and Ask AI all draw on Smart Writer Words. Guru gets 1,000 a month, and Expand costs 2 words per word, so that is about 500 words of expanded copy a month.

$20

for 10,000 more AI words

Guru and Business subscribers can buy extra Smart Writer Words at $20 a month for 10,000, and 10 extra plagiarism checks for $5 a month. The knowledge base offers both top-ups only to Guru and Business.

Put a two-writer team on it and the Semrush route is $249.95 plus at least $45 for the second user, about $295 a month, for 1,000 shared AI words. The same two people on Clearscope Essentials cost $129. That gap, not the quality of the checker, is what moves most teams. If the whole Semrush bill is the problem rather than just this tool, our Semrush alternatives page works through the cheaper options for the research side as well.

06 / Which one to put on the card

When to keep Semrush for writing, and when to buy something else

Keep the SEO Writing Assistant if

  • You are already on Guru or Business for research and rank tracking.
  • Your writers work in Google Docs and want the score in a sidebar as they type.
  • Plagiarism checks matter and 5 a month is enough.
  • You write the copy yourselves and only need a check, not generation.

Buy an alternative if

  • You are on Pro and have used your 2 documents.
  • Writing is the only reason you would upgrade to Guru.
  • You have several writers, where Semrush's per-user charge adds up fastest.
  • You need more than 1,000 AI words a month without an add-on.
  • Your published pages are the problem, not your drafts.

That last case is more common than it looks. A writing assistant helps with the article you are about to publish. It does nothing for the 40 pages already live and stuck on page three, because nobody reopens them. If those pages are where the revenue is, you need a tool that starts from the live URL.

07 / Where we fit

What SEOMake does instead, and what it does not do

We are not a like-for-like replacement for the SEO Writing Assistant, and pretending otherwise would waste your trial. There is no Google Docs sidebar, no plagiarism checker, no tone-of-voice slider and no keyword database. If you want a checker that runs while a writer types, Clearscope or Frase is the closer match.

What SEOMake does is the job that comes before and after the draft. Paste a live URL and the keyword it should rank for. It scores the page, lists what is costing it the ranking, and writes the fix: a title under 60 characters with the keyword first, a meta description at the length Google renders, a heading outline built for the intent, an opening paragraph, and the terms the page is missing against what already ranks. On paid plans it also writes a 400 to 700 word draft that follows that outline.

Starter is $49 a month, or $490 a year, with unlimited page audits and 20 drafts. Growth is $149 a month with 100 drafts, which is less than Guru plus one extra user. Every plan is on our pricing page, and each field an audit returns is shown on the AI SEO content page. If you want the brief before the draft, that part is on the SEO content brief generator.

08 / Asked and answered

Semrush SEO Writing Assistant, question by question

What are the best Semrush SEO Writing Assistant alternatives?

For a team, Clearscope Essentials at $129 a month, because it includes unlimited users. For a solo writer, Frase Starter at $49 a month for 10 articles. Inside Semrush, the Content Toolkit is $60. If the pages already exist and need correcting rather than scoring, SEOMake Starter is $49 with unlimited audits and 20 drafts.

How much does Semrush SEO Writing Assistant cost?

It is not sold on its own. Semrush knowledge base article 1547, read on 18 September 2026, lists it as part of the Guru plan at $249.95 a month, and Business at $499.95 includes it too. Pro at $139.95 and free accounts can create only 2 documents per account, in total.

Which Semrush plan includes SEO Writing Assistant?

Guru and Business, on the SEO Toolkit ladder Semrush now calls SEO Classic. Both allow unlimited documents. Guru includes 1,000 Smart Writer Words a month and 5 plagiarism checks, Business 2,000 words and 10 checks. Semrush One's pricing page does not name the tool in its markup, so check the plan detail before buying on that ladder.

Is Semrush SEO Writing Assistant free?

No. Free accounts and Pro subscribers get 2 documents per account, which is a lifetime allowance, and Pro adds 500 Smart Writer Words that also never reset. Unlimited use starts on Guru at $249.95 a month. Anyone planning more than two articles is really comparing the Guru price against a dedicated writing tool.

Is there a Semrush SEO Writing Assistant extension for Google Docs?

Yes. Semrush publishes an SEO Writing Assistant add-on for Google Docs, a plugin for WordPress and an add-in for Microsoft Word. Its setup guide lists no Chrome extension, so the browser route is the Google Docs add-on. The AI Compose feature works only in the Semrush interface and the Google Docs add-on, not in WordPress or Word.

What happened to the Semrush SEO Content Template?

The tool page still loads, but its knowledge base article, number 590, now redirects to the SEO Writing Assistant article, number 814, which does not mention templates at all. Semrush has also redirected its SEO Writing Assistant feature page to a general content marketing page. The documentation has been folded together, even where the tools remain.

Is Semrush SEO Writing Assistant worth it?

It is worth it if you are already on Guru for the research and tracking, because the writing check comes with the plan. It is poor value bought for writing alone: $249.95 a month for a content checker with 1,000 AI words, when dedicated writing tools start at $49 and include more generation.

Is Clearscope better than Semrush SEO Writing Assistant?

For a content team, usually yes on value. Clearscope Essentials is $129 a month with unlimited users and 20 drafts, while every extra Semrush user costs from $45 a month on top of Guru. Semrush wins if you also need its keyword database, position tracking and site audit, which Clearscope does not replace.

Semrush plan prices and plan contents were read from semrush.com/kb/1547-seo-toolkit-pricing-and-plans, and Writing Assistant limits from semrush.com/kb/814-seo-writing-assistant, on 18 September 2026. The feature page and knowledge base redirects were checked the same day. Clearscope and Frase prices were read from their pricing pages the same day. Content Toolkit and Surfer figures come from our read on 10 September 2026. Vendor prices change. If yours differs, trust the checkout.
