01 / THE TOOLBAR COMPARISON

MozBar alternative: the SEO toolbar extensions worth using instead of MozBar

We do not sell a browser extension, so nothing below is us pitching one. Every install count and star rating here was read off the Chrome Web Store on 20 August 2026, and every free against paid line came from the vendor's own product page the same day.

No account. No card. Real output in about 20 seconds.

02 / The short answer

Detailed if you want nothing gated. SEOquake if you want SERP metrics.

The two strongest MozBar alternatives are Detailed SEO Extension and SEOquake, and they solve different halves of the problem. Detailed reads the page you are on and gates nothing at all: 600,000 installs, 4.9 out of 5, no account, no paid tier. SEOquake is the one to install if what you actually miss is authority numbers on the search results page, because its Semrush metrics and its full page audit both run without connecting an account, on 1,000,000 installs and 4.5 out of 5. MozBar itself sits at 3.3 out of 5.

One thing worth clearing up before you switch: MozBar has not been discontinued. Moz shipped a full rewrite, MozBar V5, with 48 hour data caching specifically to cut the repeat API calls that made older builds slow and burned through account query limits. If you went looking for a replacement because you assumed the tool was dead, it is not.

Last updated August 2026. Install counts and star ratings read from each extension's Chrome Web Store listing on 20 August 2026. Free against paid gating read from moz.com, semrush.com, detailed.com, ahrefs.com, keywordseverywhere.com and mangools.com on the same day.

03 / Every toolbar, side by side

The seven SEO toolbar extensions worth comparing, and exactly what each one gates

Most roundups of this category compare feature lists and skip the only question that decides anything, which is what you get before you pay. That is the last two columns. Install counts are the Chrome Web Store's own rounded figures.

SEO toolbar browser extensions compared on installs, rating, free features and paid gating
Extension Chrome installs Rating Free without paying Needs a paid plan
MozBar Moz 900,000 3.3 / 5 (2.5K) Domain Authority, Page Authority, link counts, SERP Overlay with CSV export, page analysis, schema and hreflang checks, link highlighting Brand Authority, Spam Score, Ranking Keywords, Domain Overview. All four need a Moz Pro subscription
SEOquake Semrush 1,000,000 4.5 / 5 (2.6K) Semrush Rank, estimated US organic traffic, Traffic Cost, backlink counts, page audit, keyword density, PDF and CSV export, all without an account Referring domains, referring IPs, deeper backlink analysis and Traffic Analytics need a connected Semrush account
Keywords Everywhere Keywords Everywhere 1,000,000 4.5 / 5 (5.7K) Related keyword and People Also Search For lists keep working after credits run out Volume, CPC, competition and 12 month trend are credit metered, from $84 a year for 100,000 credits
Detailed SEO Extension Detailed 600,000 4.9 / 5 (232) Headings outline, title and meta, schema, X-Robots headers, hreflang with backreference checks, link and image export, People Also Asked extraction, Googlebot user agent Nothing. Its own site states 100 percent free, no account, no upsells, no tracking
Ahrefs SEO Toolbar Ahrefs 400,000 4.4 / 5 (534) On page report, outgoing link highlighting, canonical and noindex checks, redirect tracing, HTTP headers, raw against rendered HTML, crawler simulation Domain Rating, URL Rating, backlinks, referring domains, traffic estimates, Core Web Vitals and top 100 SERP metrics need an Ahrefs plan from $29 a month
SEO Minion Keywords Everywhere 200,000 4.0 / 5 (798) On page analysis, broken link checking, SERP preview, hreflang checking, location based SERP simulation SEO Minion Premium is bundled into Keywords Everywhere Silver at $168 a year and above
SEO Extension Mangools 50,000 4.3 / 5 (118) Domain level stats only: Domain Authority, Page Authority, Majestic Trust Flow and Citation Flow URL level analysis, competitor keywords with volumes, backlink data and rank tracking need a Mangools plan

Two patterns fall out of that table. The extensions owned by a research suite (MozBar, Ahrefs, Mangools) give away the page reading and charge for the metrics, because the metrics are the product. The independents (Detailed) and the loss leaders (SEOquake) give away the metrics because the extension is marketing for something else. If you never intend to buy the suite behind the toolbar, you are better served by the second group.

04 / What MozBar gates

What MozBar does free, and the four features that need Moz Pro

Moz marks its premium toolbar features with an asterisk on its own product page. Here is that split written out, because it is the thing that decides whether you need an alternative at all.

Free, with a Moz account

  • Domain Authority and Page Authority on any page you open
  • SERP Overlay: the same metrics on every Google result, exportable to CSV for the first page
  • Link counts, meaning linking root domains, external followed links and inbound links
  • Page Analysis for title, meta description, headers, HTTP status, meta robots, canonical and load time
  • Schema markup review on any page, yours or a competitor's
  • Highlight Links, color coding internal, external, followed and nofollow
  • Page Optimization, which scores a page against a target keyword

MozBar Premium, needs a Moz Pro subscription

  • Brand Authority, Moz's 1 to 100 brand strength score
  • Spam Score, the share of similar sites Moz has seen penalized
  • Ranking Keywords, the top 25 keywords a page ranks for with difficulty and volume
  • Domain Overview, the compressed version of Moz's domain report

Moz Pro starts at $49 a month for the individual plan and $99 for Standard. If the only reason you would pay it is Spam Score, that is an expensive way to buy one number.

There is a second cost that does not appear on any pricing page: query limits. Moz's own MozBar V5 release notes describe the new 48 hour caching as a way to reduce redundant API calls and help you stay within your Moz Pro query limits. A toolbar that can exhaust your account quota by browsing is a real reason to run something else for casual research and save MozBar for the checks that matter. The wider picture on Moz's plans and limits is on our Moz alternative comparison.

05 / Pick by the job

Which MozBar alternative to install, by what you were doing when MozBar annoyed you

Auditing your own pages

Detailed SEO Extension. The heading outline alone is worth the install, because it renders hierarchy visually and makes a broken H2 sequence obvious in a second. It also reads schema, X-Robots headers and hreflang with backreference checking, which is the part most toolbars skip.

Sizing up a SERP

SEOquake. It has been doing this since 2006 and its overlay carries Semrush Rank, estimated US organic traffic and backlink counts without an account. You can export the comparison to CSV, which is the workflow MozBar's SERP Overlay export exists for.

Keyword research while browsing

Keywords Everywhere, with your eyes open about the meter. One search that surfaces 20 People Also Ask entries and 8 related keywords costs 1 plus 20 plus 8, so 29 credits. At the $84 tier that is 100,000 credits a year, which sounds enormous until you count it that way.

Technical debugging

Ahrefs SEO Toolbar, on its free tier. Redirect tracing, HTTP headers, crawler simulation and the raw against rendered HTML diff are all free, and that last one is the fastest way to catch a page whose title only exists after JavaScript runs.

You still want the DA number

Mangools SEO Extension is the only other major toolbar that displays Domain Authority and Page Authority, and it adds Majestic Trust Flow and Citation Flow beside them. The free version stops at domain level stats, so URL level work needs a Mangools plan.

Checking a page in another country

SEO Minion or the Ahrefs toolbar. Both simulate a search from a different location, which matters if you sell into more than one market and keep seeing your own personalized results instead of the real ones.

06 / What no toolbar does

Every extension on this page reads. None of them writes.

A toolbar is a diagnosis instrument. It tells you the title is 71 characters, the H2 sequence skips a level and the meta description is missing. Then it stops, because that is all a browser extension can honestly do. The work it hands back is the writing, and the writing is where the backlog forms.

We do not ship a browser extension and have no plans to. Seomake is the other half of that workflow: you paste the URL and the keyword the page should own, and it audits the live page and hands back the corrected title under 60 characters, a meta description in the 140 to 160 range, a full heading outline, an opening paragraph and the keyword gaps the page is missing. That is a content brief with the copy already written, not another score.

The sensible setup is both. Keep whichever toolbar suits how you browse for spotting problems, and run the fix somewhere that produces finished text. If you want to see the shape of that output before deciding, the free SEO checker runs the same audit with no account, and the on page SEO audit page walks through what it checks.

07 / Switching

How to replace MozBar without losing anything you used it for

Four steps, and the third is the one people skip.

  1. STEP 1

Write down which two things you actually used

Almost nobody uses more than two MozBar features. For most people it is the SERP overlay and the DA number. Once that is written down, the replacement is usually obvious from the table above and you are not shopping for a whole suite.

  2. STEP 2

    Install one, not four

Stacking toolbars is how people end up believing extensions slow the browser down. Each one that calls an API on page load adds a request. Install a single replacement, use it for a week, and only add a second if you hit something it genuinely cannot do.

  3. STEP 3

Do not port the DA habit across

If you replace MozBar with something showing a different authority score, remember the scores are not interchangeable and none of them is a Google signal. A 2023 peer reviewed study of 3,151 domains found Moz, Semrush and Ahrefs authority metrics correlate with each other above 0.9, so switching the number you stare at changes almost nothing.

  4. STEP 4

Point the freed attention at your own pages

Overlaying competitor metrics is research, and research is the cheap part. Run your own top twenty URLs through an audit that returns the corrected copy, and you will have shipped more in an afternoon than a month of browsing with a toolbar produces.

08 / Asked and answered

The questions people ask before switching off MozBar

What is the best alternative to MozBar?

Detailed SEO Extension, if you want the on-page data with nothing gated. It is free, needs no account, and rates 4.9 out of 5 on the Chrome Web Store. If you specifically want authority numbers overlaid on the SERP, SEOquake is the closest free swap, since its Semrush metrics work without connecting an account.

Is MozBar still free?

Yes. MozBar is free for Chrome and Firefox and shows Domain Authority, Page Authority, link counts and the SERP overlay at no cost. Moz marks four features as MozBar Premium requiring a Moz Pro subscription: Brand Authority, Spam Score, Ranking Keywords and Domain Overview.

What does MozBar do?

MozBar puts Moz link metrics on top of whatever you are browsing. It shows Domain Authority and Page Authority for the page and, with SERP Overlay on, for every result on a Google results page, which you can export to CSV. It also reads schema, checks page elements and color codes followed and nofollow links.

Why is MozBar rated so low?

MozBar sits at 3.3 out of 5 across roughly 2,500 Chrome Web Store ratings, well below SEOquake at 4.5 and Detailed at 4.9. The recurring complaints are the sign in requirement, query limits tied to your Moz account and browser slowdown. Moz rebuilt it as MozBar V5 with 48 hour data caching aimed at exactly those issues.

Is there a free MozBar alternative that needs no account?

Detailed SEO Extension is the clearest one. Its own site states it is 100 percent free with no upsells and no tracking, and it needs no login for anything it does. SEOquake also runs its core reports and built in Semrush metrics without an account, though connecting one adds referring domain data.

Which SEO toolbar shows Domain Authority?

MozBar shows Domain Authority natively because Moz invented the metric. The Mangools SEO Extension also displays DA and PA alongside Majestic Trust Flow and Citation Flow, though its free version is limited to domain level stats. No other major extension licenses the DA number.

Can I use a SEO toolbar instead of an SEO tool?

Only for research. A toolbar reads one page at a time while you browse, so it is a diagnosis instrument. It will not crawl your site, will not queue the work, and will not write the corrected title or the missing section. That gap is the reason most people run a toolbar and a tool together.

Does Ahrefs have a free SEO toolbar?

Yes, and its free half is more generous than most people expect. Without any Ahrefs account you get the on page report, redirect chains, HTTP headers, raw against rendered HTML, broken link highlighting and crawler simulation. Domain Rating, URL Rating, backlinks and traffic estimates need a paid Ahrefs plan, from $29 a month.

How much does Keywords Everywhere cost?

It is credit based and billed annually: $84 a year for 100,000 credits, $168 for 400,000, $480 for 2 million and $1,440 for 8 million. One credit buys volume, CPC, competition and trend for one keyword. Credits expire after a year.

Do SEO browser extensions slow down Chrome?

Toolbars that call an API on every page load can. That is the specific problem MozBar V5 was rebuilt to fix, with 48 hour data caching to cut repeat API calls. Extensions that only parse the page you are on, like Detailed, do no network work at all and carry no measurable cost.

Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?

No. Domain Authority is a Moz metric and Google has never used it. It correlates with rankings because both are built on backlinks, so it reports link strength rather than creating it. A peer reviewed 2023 study found Moz, Semrush and Ahrefs authority scores agree with each other above 0.9 Spearman correlation, so the number you overlay barely matters.

09 / Run it

Your toolbar found the problem. This writes the fix.

Paste a URL and the keyword it should rank for. Seomake audits the live page and hands back the corrected title, meta and headings. No account, no card, no credits.
