Audit my page
01 / CITED, NOT RANKED

Generative engine optimization that gets you cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini

Answer engines do not rank your URL, they lift a passage out of it. Seomake audits a page the way a model reads it, then rewrites the parts that make it quotable: the direct answer, the structure, the tables, the date.

02 / The short answer

What generative engine optimization actually is

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI answer engines cite it as a source. Classic SEO competes for a link on a results page. GEO competes to be the passage a model quotes when it writes the answer itself, inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview. The work is mostly the same craft as good on-page SEO, aimed at a different reader: a machine that has to extract one self-contained, attributable answer from your page in a single pass.

The practical difference is what earns the citation. A model cannot quote a paragraph that only makes sense after the three paragraphs above it. It quotes the sentence that answers the question on its own, sitting under a heading that asks that question, on a page it can crawl and date. GEO is the generative slice of the wider practice of answer engine optimization, which also covers Google AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice; the tactics below win on both.

03 / The numbers

What the citation data actually says

Five figures worth knowing before you rewrite anything. They explain why freshness and structure beat keyword density in an AI answer.

Finding Figure What it means for your page
Overlap between ChatGPT and Perplexity citations Only 11% of domains Each engine has its own citation logic. Winning one does not win the others, so test the prompts that matter on each.
Freshness of AI-cited content vs organic results 25.7% fresher Answer engines prefer recently touched pages. A dated, maintained page beats an undated evergreen one.
ChatGPT pages updated within 30 days 76.4% of most-cited Recency bias is strongest on ChatGPT. Republishing a real update is a citation tactic, not vanity.
Queries resolved without a click About 40% (Bain) The answer is the destination. If you are not in it, the visit never happens.
Where citations come from Pages that already rank GEO is a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement. Rank first, then make the ranked page quotable.

Citation-overlap and freshness figures are the published industry aggregates circulating in 2026 GEO research; the no-click share is Bain & Company's. Treat them as direction, not as your own numbers. The only figures we report as fact about your site are the ones the audit measures on your live HTML.

04 / Side by side

GEO vs SEO, honestly compared

They are not rivals. They share a crawl, an index and an authority model. What changes is the unit of victory.

Classic SEO Generative engine optimization
Unit of victory A ranked URL A quoted passage, with your name on it
What the reader sees Ten links, they pick one One synthesized answer, a few sources named
What gets rewarded Relevance, authority, links The same, plus extractability and freshness
Ideal structure Keyword in title, H1, body Question as the heading, answer in the first 40 to 60 words
Best format Prose that holds attention Tables, definitions and figures a model can lift
Dates Nice to have Load bearing. Stale pages get skipped
Where you measure it Search Console, rank trackers AI referral traffic, plus re-running your buyer prompts

The overlap is the good news. Almost everything on an on page SEO checklist also helps a model quote you, and the pages that get cited are overwhelmingly pages that already rank. If your on page SEO is a mess, fix that first. GEO is the second pass, not the first.

05 / What the audit checks

The six things that decide whether a model can quote you

Seomake reads your live HTML the way an answer engine does, flags each of these, and writes the corrected version rather than leaving you a score.

A direct answer up top

The first 40 to 60 words under each heading have to answer the question on their own, with no dependency on the paragraph above. That is the passage a model lifts.

Questions as headings

Real questions, phrased the way people type them, used verbatim as H2s. A model matching a query to a passage matches the heading first.

Extractable structure

Tables, definition lists and short labelled rows survive extraction. A wall of prose does not, however good the prose is.

An honest, visible date

A last-updated line the page actually earns. Recency is one of the strongest citation signals, and the strongest of all on ChatGPT.

Crawlability for AI agents

GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended have to be allowed in robots.txt. Blocking them is the quiet way to lose every citation at once.

Schema that names the entity

Organization, Article and FAQ markup so the engine knows who is answering and can attribute it to you by name, not to whoever quoted you second.

06 / The loop

From unquotable page to cited source, in four steps

  1. STEP 1

Audit the page as a model reads it

Paste the URL and the keyword. Seomake fetches the live page and scores what an extractor would actually find on it.

  2. STEP 2

Get the rewrite, not the grade

The direct-answer block, the question headings, the table to add and the schema to ship, written out and ready to approve.

  3. STEP 3

    Publish and date it

Ship the fix with an honest last-updated line. Recrawls are what put the new passage in front of the engines.

  4. STEP 4

    Re-run the buyer prompts

Ask each engine the questions your buyers ask, on a schedule, and watch whether your name starts appearing in the answer.

It is the same loop as the rest of the product, pointed at a different reader. The SEO audit tool finds it, AI content writes it, and rank tracking tells you whether it moved.

07 / Asked and answered

Generative engine optimization, question by question

What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring content so AI answer engines cite it as a source. Classic SEO competes for a blue link on a results page. GEO competes to be the passage a model lifts and attributes when it writes an answer for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO optimizes a page to rank; GEO optimizes a passage to be quoted. A search engine returns ten links and lets the user choose. A generative engine synthesizes one answer from several sources and names a few of them. So GEO rewards self-contained answers, clean structure, tables and fresh dates, on top of the authority signals SEO already earns.

Does SEO still matter if AI answers the question?

Yes. Generative engines are built on the same crawl and the same authority signals as search. Almost every page an AI cites is a page that already ranks. GEO is not a replacement for SEO, it is a second layer on top of it: rank first, then make the ranked page easy to quote.

How do I get my content cited by ChatGPT?

Answer the question directly in the first 40 to 60 words under a heading that repeats the question, keep the page crawlable to GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, publish real tables and figures instead of adjectives, and keep the page updated. ChatGPT leans hard on recency: most of its most-cited pages were touched in the last month.

Can you track whether an AI engine cites your site?

You can track it, but not in Search Console. Citations show up as brand mentions inside AI answers plus a trickle of referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com. Watch those referrers in analytics, and re-run the same buyer prompts on each engine on a schedule to see whether you appear.

How long does generative engine optimization take to work?

Faster than classic SEO, because there is no ranking queue to wait out. Once an engine recrawls a rewritten page, it can be cited on the next query. Pages that already rank on page one tend to start appearing in AI answers within weeks of being restructured, not months.

If you want the longer read on how the engines pick their sources, the blog goes deeper on how AI answer engines choose what to cite. And if the open question is whether any of this is working, an AI visibility tracker is how teams sample the engines on a schedule; the comparison covers what the tools measure, what they cost, and what the score can and cannot tell you.
