01 / BING SEO

Bing SEO tools, Bing SEO audits, and how to rank on Bing now that it feeds ChatGPT

Bing rewards literal, exact-match on-page work more than Google does, which makes it the one engine where a title and meta rewrite still moves the needle on its own. Run a page through the audit and see what it would change.

02 / The short answer

What Bing SEO is, and why it stopped being optional

Bing SEO is the work of ranking in Microsoft Bing, which publishes six ranking signals: relevance, quality and credibility, user engagement, freshness, location and language, and page load time. Most of it overlaps with Google SEO. Three things differ: Bing weights exact-match keywords in titles and metadata more heavily, Bing counts social engagement as a signal, and Bing never adopted mobile-first indexing. In 2026 the strongest reason to do it is indirect. ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot are both grounded in Bing's index, so a page Bing has not indexed is usually a page those assistants cannot cite.

For a long time the honest answer to "should I optimize for Bing" was "not really, just do Google properly and take the Bing traffic as a bonus." That answer is now out of date, and not because Bing's own share moved much. It moved a little: Bing runs close to 10 percent of US searches across all devices and around 17 percent on desktop, which is where people research business software on a work machine. Sources put the desktop figure between roughly 16.7 and 17.6 percent, so treat it as a range rather than a number.

What actually changed is who else reads Bing's index. When OpenAI launched search inside ChatGPT it grounded the feature in Bing, and it still does, supplemented by its own crawler for fresh fetches. Microsoft Copilot works from what Bing has already crawled and ranked. Both of those products answer questions that used to be typed into a search box, and both pick their citations from a candidate pool. If Bing has never indexed your page, your page is not in the pool. That is a much better reason to spend an afternoon on Bing than a few percent of extra clicks.

03 / Why Bing decides AI visibility

Which assistant reads which index

Answer engines do not read the open web live for most queries. They retrieve from an index, rank candidates, then write a summary and cite what they used. So the practical question for AI visibility is not "how do I please ChatGPT" but "whose index is it reading, and am I in it."

Assistant Where it retrieves from What that means for you
ChatGPT Search Bing index, plus OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot for fresh fetches Not in Bing usually means not in the pool ChatGPT can cite
Microsoft Copilot Bing index and Bing results ranking Copilot Search is grounded on what Bing already crawled and ranked
Google AI Overviews Google index Unaffected by Bing coverage, optimize separately
Perplexity Own crawler plus third-party indexes Partly independent, so treat Bing as necessary but not sufficient

Two practical consequences follow. First, getting indexed on Bing is a prerequisite for ChatGPT and Copilot citations, and it is cheap: verify a domain, submit a sitemap, push URLs with IndexNow. Second, ranking in Bing's top results matters more than the raw click numbers suggest, because the candidate pool an assistant summarizes is drawn from the top of the results, not the middle. The wider optimization work sits on our answer engine optimization page, and the measurement side on the AI visibility tracker comparison.

One caution against overclaiming, since plenty of pages on this topic do. Being indexed in Bing does not buy you a citation. It qualifies you to be considered. Whether an assistant quotes you still depends on whether your page answers the question directly, early, and in language that survives being lifted out of context. That is the part covered on how to get cited by ChatGPT.

04 / Bing ranking factors

The six signals Bing publishes, and what each one asks of a page

Bing is unusually direct about this. Where Google describes principles, Bing's webmaster guidelines name six parameters outright. This is the list, in Bing's own order, with what it translates to on a page you control.

Signal What Bing says it measures What to actually do
Relevance How closely the page matches the intent behind the query and answers it Exact phrase in title, H1, meta, first 100 words, URL
Quality and credibility How reputable the author and site are, including what they cite Named author, real sources, dated updates, no filler
User engagement Click-through rate, whether visitors bounce back, whether they reformulate A title that matches intent and an opening that answers it
Freshness Recency, weighted harder where timeliness is part of relevance A visible last-updated date and genuine revisions
Location and language User country and city, host location, document language Correct language tags and a US-relevant framing
Page load time How fast the page becomes useful The usual Core Web Vitals work carries over

User engagement is the one worth reading twice. Bing describes it in terms of what happens on the results page and immediately after: did people click this result, did they stay, or did they come straight back and rephrase the query. That makes the title and the first paragraph load bearing in a way that has nothing to do with keyword density. A title that oversells and a page that then fails to deliver is a ranking problem on Bing, not just a trust problem.

05 / Bing SEO vs Google SEO

Where Bing and Google genuinely differ

Most of SEO is shared. Useful content, crawlable architecture, sensible internal links and a fast page work on both. These five are the places where the same page is treated differently, which is where a Bing-specific hour is worth spending.

Area Google Bing What it changes
Keyword matching Semantic, context led, tolerant of synonyms Weights literal exact-match phrases more heavily Use the exact phrase once in each key slot
Social engagement States it is not a direct ranking factor Counts genuine social engagement as a signal Circulation has real value on Bing
Mobile indexing Mobile-first across the whole index Device agnostic, no mobile-first plans Desktop markup still counts on Bing
Instant submission Does not participate in IndexNow Created IndexNow, indexes pushed URLs fast Push every publish and update
Backlinks Volume and quality of the link graph Relevance and domain trust over raw volume, older domains weigh more Fewer, closer, older links

The exact-match difference is the one that pays fastest. Google got good at understanding that "invoice software for contractors" and "contractor billing tool" are the same intent. Bing is less forgiving, so a page whose title merely gestures at the topic can rank in Google and sit on page six in Bing. Putting the literal phrase in the title, H1, meta description and opening sentence is a fifteen-minute edit that does not hurt you in Google. The full treatment is on the on-page SEO page, and the head-to-head reasoning in Bing SEO vs Google SEO.

06 / How to rank on Bing

The order to actually do this in

Four steps, in sequence. The first two are one-off setup and take under an hour. The last two are the work.

01

Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools and import from Search Console

It is free, and it will import your verified properties and sitemaps straight from Google Search Console rather than making you redo the setup. This is also the only place you can see your actual Bing query data, which is usually nothing like your Google query data.

02

Submit the sitemap, then push URLs with IndexNow

Manual URL submission has a daily quota that scales with how long the domain has been verified. A newly verified site starts near ten URLs a day and grows toward 10,000 over months, which surprises people migrating a large site. IndexNow submissions sit outside that quota entirely, so use IndexNow as the default and save manual submissions for priority pages.

03

Make the target phrase literal in the five slots that count

Title tag, H1, meta description, first 100 words, URL. Once each, in the exact wording someone would type. This is the single highest-return Bing edit and it is the one most pages fail, because they were written for a Google that no longer needs the help.

04

Keep it fresh and give it somewhere to circulate

Freshness is on Bing's published list, so a genuinely revised and visibly dated page holds better than one left alone. Social engagement feeds Bing's engagement signal in a way Google says it does not, so a page with real circulation carries an advantage it would not have in Google.

If you run a store, the same sequence applies with platform quirks on top, covered on Shopify SEO and WooCommerce SEO.

07 / Where Seomake fits

Step three is the one you can hand off

Steps one, two and four are yours: nobody can verify your domain or circulate your page for you. Step three, the literal on-page work across every page you own, is repetitive, easy to get subtly wrong, and exactly what this tool does. Paste a URL and a target phrase and the audit returns a score and a verdict, then each issue with its severity, the evidence from your page, and the fix written out. Alongside it you get a rewritten title tag and meta description, a proposed H1, H2 and H3 outline, an opening paragraph, and the keyword gaps it found. You approve or you ignore. Because Bing rewards exact-match placement more than Google does, this specific kind of output is worth more on Bing than anywhere else.

What it is not, so you can rule it out fast: there is no Bing Webmaster Tools integration, we do not push IndexNow on your behalf, and we run no web index, which means no backlink database and no competitor traffic estimates. Those are real products and other people sell them. If a link index is what you need, our Ahrefs alternative page says so plainly, and the whole field's list prices sit on SEO software pricing.

Pricing is flat rather than credit metered: Starter is $49 a month for one site with unlimited audits, Growth is $149 for five sites and three seats, Agency is $499. Unlimited audits matters here specifically, because doing the Bing exact-match pass properly means running every page you own through it once, not rationing twenty checks.

08 / Bing SEO questions

Frequently asked questions about Bing SEO

How do I rank on Bing?

Put the exact target phrase in the title tag, the H1, the meta description, the first 100 words and the URL. Bing weights literal keyword matching more heavily than Google does. Then verify the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, and keep the page updated, because freshness is one of six signals Bing publishes.

Is Bing SEO different from Google SEO?

The fundamentals are the same and about 80 percent of the work carries over. Three differences matter: Bing rewards exact-match keywords in titles and metadata more than Google does, Bing counts social engagement as a ranking signal, and Bing has no mobile-first indexing because it stayed device agnostic.

What are Bing ranking factors?

Bing publishes six: relevance, quality and credibility, user engagement, freshness, location and language, and page load time. User engagement is the one Bing describes in the most detail, covering click-through rate from the results page, whether visitors bounce straight back, and whether they reformulate the query.

Does ChatGPT use Bing?

Yes, for search. ChatGPT Search is grounded primarily in Bing's index, supplemented by OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, for fresh page fetches. That means a page missing from Bing's index is usually missing from the pool ChatGPT can cite, however well it ranks in Google.

How do I get my website indexed on Bing?

Verify the domain in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit an XML sitemap, then push new URLs with IndexNow. Bing's manual submission quota starts small on a newly verified domain, roughly ten URLs a day, and grows with verification age to as many as 10,000. IndexNow submissions sit outside that quota.

Is Bing SEO worth it?

In the United States, yes. Bing runs close to 10 percent of all US searches and roughly 17 percent on desktop, where business software research happens. The stronger argument in 2026 is indirect: Bing's index is what ChatGPT Search and Microsoft Copilot draw on, so Bing coverage decides AI visibility.

What is IndexNow?

An open protocol that lets a site push a URL to search engines the moment it is published, updated or deleted, instead of waiting to be recrawled. Microsoft Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep participate. Google does not use IndexNow. Awareness is guaranteed, indexing is not.

Does Bing use mobile-first indexing?

No. Google moved its entire index to mobile-first crawling. Bing deliberately stayed device agnostic and has said it has no plans to follow. In practice your desktop markup still counts on Bing, so content hidden or stripped from a mobile template is not penalized the same way.

Do social signals affect Bing rankings?

Bing treats social engagement as a signal in a way Google says it does not. Genuine shares and discussion around a URL feed the engagement side of Bing's model. It is not a shortcut and buying engagement does not work, but a page with real circulation has an advantage on Bing it would not have on Google.

Can I use the same content for Bing and Google SEO?

Yes, and you should. Maintaining two versions of a page would split your signals and risks duplication problems on both engines. Write one page, then tighten the title, H1, meta description and opening paragraph so the exact target phrase appears literally. That edit helps on Bing and costs nothing on Google.
