Shopify SEO tools that run a real Shopify SEO audit on any store URL and write the fixes
Paste a product or collection URL and the query it should rank for. You get the score, the specific issues, and the corrected page title, meta description and copy ready to paste into Shopify's Search engine listing fields. No app install, no theme code, no account for the first run.
Shopify handles the plumbing. It does not write a single word of what ranks you.
Shopify generates your sitemap and robots.txt, serves every page over HTTPS from a CDN, and creates a redirect automatically when you change a URL handle. What it never does is write your page titles, meta descriptions, alt text and product copy. Those four fields decide almost every ranking outcome on a store, and they sit empty by default on every product you add.
That gap is why Shopify SEO advice is so repetitive. There is very little technical work to do, so guides pad out the technical section and skim the part that matters. The real job on a Shopify store is unglamorous: several hundred product pages that all inherited a default title, and nobody with a free week to rewrite them.
Two constraints are genuinely Shopify's fault and worth knowing before you start. The URL structure is fixed, so every product lives under /products/ and every collection under /collections/ whether you like it or not. And the same product is reachable through every collection it belongs to, which multiplies URLs even though Shopify canonicals them correctly. Section 04 covers what to do about both.

What Shopify handles automatically, and what it leaves entirely to you
Worth being precise about this, because "Shopify is bad for SEO" and "Shopify does SEO for you" are both wrong and both common. Here is the actual split.
-
Sitemap
Shopify does this for you
Generates and updates /sitemap.xml automatically
You have to do this
Nothing, though it includes policy and gift card pages you do not need
-
HTTPS and speed
Shopify does this for you
SSL on every page, global CDN, managed hosting
You have to do this
Audit your theme apps. Third-party scripts are the usual speed problem
-
Redirects
Shopify does this for you
Creates one automatically when you change a URL handle
You have to do this
Check them. Chained redirects from repeated edits pile up
-
Canonical tags
Shopify does this for you
Points collection paths back to the clean /products/ URL
You have to do this
Fix internal links that still point at the collection path
-
Page titles
Shopify does this for you
Falls back to the product name plus your store name
You have to do this
Write a real one per page. This is the highest-value hour on a store
-
Meta descriptions
Shopify does this for you
Nothing. The field is empty until you fill it
You have to do this
Write one per product, collection and article
-
Alt text
Shopify does this for you
Nothing. Uploaded images have none
You have to do this
Add a short description to every image in the media library
-
Product copy
Shopify does this for you
Nothing. Supplier descriptions import as-is
You have to do this
Rewrite them. Duplicated supplier copy is the classic store-wide problem
-
Schema markup
Shopify does this for you
Most themes emit basic Product markup
You have to do this
Verify it. Theme quality here varies enormously
-
Structure and internal links
Shopify does this for you
Nothing beyond your navigation
You have to do this
Build collection pages that deserve to rank and link them properly

Read the right column and notice what it is. It is not engineering. It is writing, repeated across every URL in your catalog. That is why store owners stall: the work is neither hard nor interesting, and it scales with how many products you sell.
The Shopify SEO checklist, field by field
Every SEO field Shopify exposes, where it lives, what its real limit is, and what to put in it. Open any product, scroll to the bottom, and expand Search engine listing. Three of these six fields are there.
| Field | Where it lives | Real limit | What to put in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Page title | Product, collection, page, article | Up to 70 characters accepted, about 55 to 60 visible | Lead with what the shopper searched, not your brand |
| Meta description | Product, collection, page, article | About 155 characters visible | Sell the click. Google rewrites vague ones |
| URL handle | Product, collection, page, article | Prefix is fixed by Shopify | Short, readable, no dates or numbers you will regret |
| Image alt text | Media library, per image | One short descriptive sentence | Describe the product in the image, not the keyword |
| Store title and description | Online Store then Preferences | Same limits as above | Set this first. It is the homepage listing |
| Collection description | Collection page body | No hard limit | The only place a collection earns topical relevance |
The store name problem, and why your titles look truncated
Most Shopify themes build the title tag as the product name followed by the store name. On a product called "Merino Wool Crew Neck Sweater in Charcoal" that leaves you a title that reads past the visible limit before it reaches anything useful, so the shopper sees a fragment and your brand. Google truncates around 600 pixels, roughly 55 to 60 characters, and Google's own title link guidance is explicit that it will rewrite titles it finds unhelpful, usually pulling from your H1 instead.
Filling the Page title field on the product overrides the template and drops the appended store name. Lead with the phrase a shopper types, then qualify. "Merino Wool Sweater, Charcoal" beats "Merino Wool Crew Neck Sweater in Charcoal | StoreName" in the only place it matters, which is the 60 characters a person actually reads.
The collection URL problem
A product in five collections is reachable at six URLs: the clean /products/item path plus one /collections/name/products/item path per collection. Shopify sets the canonical on all of them to the clean path, so this rarely causes an indexing problem. What it does cause is a linking problem. If your collection grids, related product blocks and blog links point at the collection paths, you are passing your own internal link signals to URLs that are explicitly telling Google to ignore them.
The fix is a theme edit, not an app: make product links render the clean /products/ path. Most modern themes already do. Check by hovering a product tile on a collection page and reading the status bar.
Collections are the pages that actually rank
Product pages compete for one long-tail query each and mostly lose to marketplaces. Collection pages compete for the category term, which is where the volume and the buying intent both sit. A collection with a real description, a sensible title and internal links from your content is the closest thing a store has to a money page. Most stores leave collection descriptions blank, which is the single biggest opportunity on a typical Shopify site.
How to run a Shopify SEO audit that produces changes, not a list
A crawler will hand you four hundred issues sorted by severity and you will fix none of them, because the output is a description of the problem rather than the fix. Run the audit in this order instead, and stop after each step to actually ship the change.
1. Your ten highest-revenue products
Not your worst pages. Your best ones. Check the Page title, meta description, alt text and whether the description is supplier copy. Fixing the pages that already convert pays back fastest.
2. Every collection page
There are usually fewer than thirty. Each one needs a written description and a title built on the category term. This is normally where the largest gain on a store is sitting.
3. Search Console, sorted by impressions
Queries with impressions and no clicks are pages ranking where nobody sees them, or titles nobody wants to click. Both are title and meta problems, and both are same-day fixes.
4. Duplicated supplier descriptions
If you dropship or resell, run a phrase from one product description through Google in quotes. If forty stores return, that page has nothing of its own to rank with.
5. Images without alt text
Product photography drives real traffic through image search on visual categories. Alt text is also an accessibility requirement, so this one is not optional regardless of rankings.
6. Then, and only then, the crawler
Broken links, redirect chains from repeated handle edits, orphaned pages. Real issues, but they are maintenance. They are not why you are on page three.
Steps 1 through 3 are what our SEO audit tool was built to close out. Paste the URL and the query it should own, and it returns the corrected title, meta and copy rather than a severity rating. The broader method is the same one in our on page SEO checklist, applied to a catalog instead of a content site.
Shopify SEO tools and apps: what each category is actually for
Store owners tend to buy a Shopify SEO app first, because it is in the app store and it is cheap. That is often the wrong first purchase. Apps are good at doing one edit across three thousand products. They are not good at deciding what the edit should say. Match the tool to which of those two problems you have.
| Option | Entry price | What you get | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify built-in fields | Included | Page title, meta description, URL handle, alt text | Everyone. This is the floor, not an option |
| Bulk SEO apps | Varies by app | Editing metadata across a large catalog at once | Catalogs past roughly 500 products |
| Moz Pro Standard | $99/mo | 300 tracked keywords, crawls, 50 tracked AI prompts | Budget-constrained stores that need tracking |
| Ahrefs Lite | $129/mo | Link research, 750 tracked keywords, site crawl | Stores competing on links in a hard niche |
| Semrush SEO | $139/mo | Keyword database, crawls, 500 keywords daily | Stores running ads and social from one seat |
| Seomake Starter | $49/mo | Unlimited page audits and the rewritten title, meta and copy | Stores that know the target and need the words written |
We sell the last row, so weigh it accordingly. Seomake has no keyword database, no link index and no competitor research, and it does not install into Shopify. It reads a URL you point it at, scores it against the query it should own, and writes the corrected title, meta description, headings and body copy for you to paste into the Search engine listing fields. If what you need is a keyword database, buy one of the rows above it instead. Our best SEO tools comparison covers that field properly, and Semrush vs Ahrefs settles the two most common candidates.
Not installing into your store is a deliberate choice and it cuts both ways. You paste changes yourself, which is slower than a one-click app. In exchange nothing writes to your theme, nothing breaks at checkout, and every change survives cancelling the subscription because it went into your Shopify admin, not into a vendor's overlay. Stores that have been burned by an app injecting tags into their theme tend to prefer the trade.
Shoppers now ask ChatGPT for product recommendations, and stores are not written for it
A growing share of product discovery starts with a question typed into an assistant rather than a search box: best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet, that sort of thing. Answer engines pull from pages that state facts plainly, and a typical product page states almost nothing a model can lift. Marketing adjectives, a size chart image, and a description the supplier wrote for forty other stores.
What gets a store cited is specificity in text. Materials, measurements, weight, fit notes, what it is not good for, and comparison against the obvious alternative. A spec table in real HTML is worth more than a spec image, because a model can read one and not the other. This is the same discipline as classic on-page work, applied to the assumption that the reader is a machine summarizing for a buyer.
Collection pages benefit most, because "best X for Y" questions map to categories rather than individual products. A collection page that genuinely explains how to choose within the category, with honest trade-offs, is the format answer engines quote. We cover the mechanics on our answer engine optimization page and the measurement side on the AI visibility tracker comparison.
Shopify SEO, question by question
Does Shopify do SEO for you?
Shopify does the infrastructure for you: it generates sitemap.xml and robots.txt, serves every page over HTTPS from a global CDN, and creates a redirect automatically when you change a URL handle. It does not write your page titles, meta descriptions, alt text or product copy, and those are the parts that decide rankings.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes, for most stores. Shopify handles the technical basics better than a self-hosted setup a store owner maintains alone. Its real constraints are a fixed URL structure, duplicate paths to products through collections, and limited canonical and schema control. Those are annoyances, not reasons to move platforms.
How do I do SEO on Shopify?
Set the store title and description under Online Store then Preferences, then work resource by resource: open each product, collection, page and article, expand the Search engine listing section, and write a unique page title, meta description and URL handle. Add alt text to every image in the media library. Then track whether positions move.
Where are the SEO settings in Shopify?
On any product, collection, page or blog post, scroll to the bottom and open the Search engine listing section. It holds three fields: Page title, Meta description and URL handle. Store-wide defaults live under Online Store then Preferences. Image alt text is edited in the media library, not in that section.
What is the character limit for a Shopify page title?
Shopify accepts up to 70 characters in the Page title field, but Google truncates around 600 pixels, which is roughly 55 to 60 characters. Write for the display limit, not the field limit. Anything past about 60 characters still counts for relevance but will not be visible in the result.
Why does my Shopify product title show my store name in Google?
Most Shopify themes render the title tag as the product name followed by the store name. On a product with a long name this pushes your actual keyword past the visible limit, so shoppers see the brand and half a product name. Overriding the Page title field on the product removes the appended store name.
Does Shopify create duplicate content?
It creates duplicate URLs rather than duplicate content. The same product is reachable at /products/item and at /collections/name/products/item for every collection it belongs to. Shopify canonicals all of them to the clean /products/ URL, so the index stays clean, but internal links pointing at collection paths still split your own signals.
Do I need a Shopify SEO app?
Only for bulk work. Editing 30 products by hand in the Search engine listing fields is a slow afternoon, not a problem. Editing 3,000 is not something you do by hand. If your catalog is small, the built-in fields plus a tool that writes the copy will beat most apps.
How much does Shopify SEO cost?
Doing it yourself with the built-in fields costs nothing but time. A full research suite runs $99 to $139 a month at entry: Moz Pro Standard $99, Ahrefs Lite $129, Semrush SEO $139. Agencies typically quote $1,500 to $5,000 a month, which is the expensive way to get product titles rewritten.
How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
On-page changes to pages Google already crawls regularly tend to show movement within two to six weeks. New collections and new content take longer, usually three to six months to settle. Title and meta rewrites move fastest because they change how an existing ranking page is presented.
The first question is the one most store owners are really asking, and it has a longer answer than fits here. We worked through it properly in does Shopify do SEO for you, including what the platform quietly gets right and the four things it will never do on your behalf.
Audit one product page before you rewrite three hundred
Paste a Shopify product or collection URL and the query it should rank for. Seomake reads the live page, scores it, and writes the title, meta description and copy you can paste into the Search engine listing fields today. No app, no account, no card.
