Marketo SEO tool alternative: what replaced the Marketo Engage SEO tool and its page optimization score
Adobe switched the Marketo Engage SEO feature off on 31 March 2026 and pulled the tile a day later. Adobe's advice was to buy Semrush, four weeks before Adobe finished buying Semrush. This page maps each of the three tabs you lost to a priced replacement, and says plainly which two we do not cover. While you read, point the audit at a landing page you need ranking.
What replaces the Marketo Engage SEO tool, in one paragraph
There is no one-to-one replacement, because the Marketo SEO tile bundled three separate products. Adobe recommends Semrush at $139 a month, which covers all three and is now an Adobe product itself. Ahrefs Lite at $129 covers the Inbound Links half better. Moz Pro Standard at $99 is the cheapest platform that still carries a real link index. If what you actually opened the tile for was the Page Optimization Score and its issue list, that job costs $49 a month and needs no platform subscription at all.
The expensive mistake here is replacing a bundle you barely used. Marketo gave the SEO tool away inside a subscription you were already paying for, so nobody ever priced it. Before you sign anything, work out which of the three tabs somebody on your team opened in the last quarter, and buy only that.
Adobe deleted its own announcement, which is why you cannot find a straight answer
The reason this question is so hard to research is that both authoritative pages are gone. We resolved them on 6 September 2026. The Marketing Nation product blog post that announced the SEO feature deprecation now returns a 301 redirect to the Experience League community homepage, not to a replacement notice. The documentation page that defined the Page Optimization Score redirects to the generic Marketo docs index. The community discussion thread still loads, but it is a forum thread, not a statement.
So the record of what you lost sits in the Internet Archive. From Adobe's own manual, captured 25 April 2024: "The Page Optimization Score is an overall ranking of how well your page is optimized for search, on a scale of 1 to 100. It is based on dozens of best practices in SEO." Adobe described the scoring method as "the secret sauce" and never published the inputs. An Issues tab listed, in Adobe's words, the "actionable items that will help improve your Optimization Score", with an impact rating on each.
The timeline itself is worth having in one place. Adobe announced the deprecation in the February 2026 Marketo Engage release notes. The export deadline for existing keyword and page data was 30 March 2026. The feature was deprecated on 31 March. The tile came off the platform on 1 April. Adobe's stated reason was low adoption, and Keith Gluck at Adobe framed it as redirecting resources toward actively used parts of the platform.
This is the second time we have written up an SEO product disappearing quietly enough that its users could not tell what had happened. The first was what happened to Searchmetrics and what replaced it, and the pattern is identical: a decision gets made upstream, the customers find out through a release note, and the search results fill with corporate language that answers none of their questions.
Marketo SEO tool alternatives compared, with prices read from each vendor
Every figure below came off the vendor's own pricing page in the first week of September 2026. The fourth column is the one the roundups leave out, and it is the column that decides whether you are about to buy three products to replace one habit.
| Tool | Entry price | Which tabs it replaces | What it does not | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush SEO | $139 a month | All three: rank tracking, site audit and backlinks | Adobe now owns it. Nothing writes the corrected page for you. | Teams who used the Keywords tab daily and want one vendor |
| Ahrefs Lite | $129 a month | Inbound Links, plus rank tracking on 5 projects | One seat. Extra users are $40 a month each and hard capped. | Whoever on the team lived in the Inbound Links report |
| Moz Pro Standard | $99 a month, or $79 billed annually | Rank tracking on 3 sites and 300 keywords, crawl, link data | No published extra-seat rate at all. Small keyword allowance. | The cheapest full platform with a real link index |
| Search Atlas Starter | $99 a month, or $79 billed annually | Site audit and rank tracking, plus automated on-page fixes | One seat, one project. AI engine tracking starts a tier up. | Teams who want changes deployed rather than recommended |
| Seomake | $49 a month | The Pages tab: a page score, the issue list, and the rewrite | No rank tracker, no backlink index, no whole-site crawler. | Anyone whose Marketo habit was the Page Optimization Score |
Two notes on the numbers. Moz publishes no extra-seat rate anywhere, so a team price cannot be worked out from its pricing page at all, which matters if six people used to have the Marketo tile. Search Atlas and Moz both default to annual billing at a discount, which is why two prices appear for one plan. The full ladders are on the Semrush plan ladder and our Moz Pro pricing page.
Where each part of the Marketo SEO tool went
The tile had three tabs and a pair of trend reports. Nothing on the market sells that combination at one price any more, so the useful exercise is deciding which tab your team genuinely used rather than replacing the bundle out of habit.
Keywords
A research platform. Marketo tracked search rankings, volumes and trends and let you compare a competitor on the same terms. We ship no ranking fetcher at all, so this half goes to Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz or Search Atlas and there is no cheap way around it.
Pages
This one. Marketo scored every page on your domain 1 to 100 and listed the issues holding the score down. That is the job Seomake does, with one difference that matters: it writes the corrected title, meta description and heading outline rather than handing you the list.
Inbound Links
Ahrefs or Moz. Maintaining a web-wide link index costs millions of dollars a year to crawl, which is exactly why no $49 tool has one and why anyone claiming otherwise is reselling somebody else's sample.
Keyword Trends reports
Whichever research platform you land on, plus Search Console for your own data. Marketo let you export these as CSV, and if you did that before 30 March 2026 you still have the history. If you did not, it is gone.
One thing to weigh before following Adobe's recommendation as written. Adobe named Semrush as the replacement in the same release cycle in which it was closing a $1.9 billion acquisition of Semrush, and the deal completed on 28 April 2026, four weeks after the tile came off. That does not make the recommendation wrong, and Semrush genuinely is the closest like-for-like. It does mean the advice was not neutral, and it is worth understanding what changes for a Semrush customer under Adobe ownership before you commit to an annual contract. We set that out on the Semrush and Adobe acquisition page, and priced the cheaper end of the market against it in cheaper alternatives to Semrush.
For most Marketo teams, the Pages tab was the whole tool
Think about how the tile got used in practice. A demand generation manager builds a landing page for a campaign, opens the SEO tab, sees a score out of 100 and a list of issues, fixes the obvious ones, and ships. That is a pre-flight check on a page that is about to go live behind paid spend. It is not competitive research and it is not link building. It is quality control, done by somebody whose actual job that week is the campaign.
Adobe was right that adoption was low, and the reason is instructive. The tool stopped at the diagnosis. It told you the title was too long and the meta description was missing, then left you to write them, which is the part that takes the time and the part a demand gen manager is least sure about. A score with no fix attached gets checked once and then ignored, which is roughly the adoption curve Adobe described.
That gap is the reason this page exists. Seomake reads the live URL and the keyword it should rank for, scores it, lists what is costing the ranking, and then writes the corrected version: a title under 60 characters with the term at the front, a meta description at the length Google actually renders, the heading outline, an opening paragraph and the terms the page is missing. Same pre-flight check, with the writing done. For a Marketo team that lost a scoring widget, that is a closer replacement than a research platform, and it is a tenth of the price of Semrush Advanced.
If you want the mechanics before you try it, they are on how the audit and rewrite work, the same check across a whole set of URLs is covered on the on page SEO audit page, and the plans are on our pricing page.
The two tabs we do not replace, said plainly
Seomake does not track keyword rankings and does not maintain a backlink index. Two of the three things the Marketo SEO tile did, we do not do, and no amount of clever positioning changes that. If your team used the Keywords tab to watch positions week over week, or the Inbound Links tab to watch who was linking to you, you need a research platform and you should buy one from the table above.
Where the honest line sits: a link index costs millions of dollars a year to crawl and keep current, and a ranking fetcher means querying search results at scale every day. Those are infrastructure businesses. Any $49 tool that claims both is either sampling thinly or reselling somebody else's data, and you will find out which the first time a number looks wrong. If you want the whole category priced against each other, including where the cheap options genuinely hold up, that is the SEO tools comparison.
The audit at the top of this page runs without an account or a card, so the cheapest way to settle which camp you are in is to point it at one of the landing pages you used to score in Marketo and look at what comes back.
The Marketo SEO deprecation, question by question
What happened to the Marketo Engage SEO tool?
Adobe deprecated it. The announcement appeared in the February 2026 Marketo Engage release notes, the feature stopped working on 31 March 2026, and the SEO tile was removed from the platform on 1 April 2026. Customers had until 30 March to export their keyword and page data as CSV. Adobe said the feature had low adoption.
What does Adobe recommend instead of the Marketo SEO tool?
Semrush. Adobe pointed Marketo Engage customers at it for keyword research, site auditing, backlink analytics, competitive intelligence and content optimization. Worth knowing before you act on that advice: Adobe agreed to buy Semrush in November 2025 for about $1.9 billion and completed the deal on 28 April 2026, four weeks after removing the Marketo tile.
What was the Marketo page optimization score?
Adobe defined it as "an overall ranking of how well your page is optimized for search, on a scale of 1 to 100," based on "dozens of best practices in SEO." An Issues tab listed the actionable items that would raise it, ranked by impact. Adobe called the scoring method "the secret sauce" and never published the inputs.
Can I still get my Marketo SEO data back?
Not from Adobe. The export window closed on 30 March 2026 and the tile was removed the following day, so if nobody on the team pulled the CSVs, the keyword history and page scores are gone. Rebuild the baseline in whichever tool you pick and treat the first month as your new starting point rather than trying to reconcile against numbers you no longer have.
Do I need a full SEO platform to replace it?
Only if you used the Keywords or Inbound Links tabs. A lot of Marketo teams opened the SEO tile for one reason, which was checking whether a landing page was set up properly before it went live. That job does not need a $139 platform. It needs a page-level audit, and you can add research data later if you find you miss it.
Why can I not find Adobe's announcement about the SEO deprecation?
Because it has been taken down. Checked on 6 September 2026, the Marketing Nation product blog post announcing the deprecation redirects to the Experience League community homepage, and the documentation page that defined the Page Optimization Score redirects to the generic Marketo docs index. The community discussion thread still resolves, but the two authoritative pages do not.
Is there a free replacement for the Marketo SEO tool?
There are free page checkers, and they give you the same thing Marketo gave you: a score and a list of complaints. That was never the hard part. The hard part is writing a title under 60 characters that leads with the term, a meta description at the length Google renders, and a heading outline that covers the intent. Free tools stop before that.
Adobe's announcement and documentation URLs re-resolved, and competitor prices verified, on 6 September 2026. The Page Optimization Score definition is quoted from the Internet Archive snapshot of Adobe's documentation taken 25 April 2024.
The tile is gone. The landing pages it was scoring are still live.
Paste a URL and the keyword it should rank for. Seomake scores the page, lists what is costing you the ranking, and writes the corrected title, meta and headings. No account, no card, no credits.
